The Notre Dame Pandas soccer team came away from the Zionsville (Indiana) Invitational with a 2-2 tie against the Carmel (Indiana) Greyhounds in a battle of nationally-ranked teams on MaxPreps.

Notre Dame (10-1-1) is ranked ninth and Carmel (7-0-2) 11th in the latest poll. The Pandas held a 2-1 lead in the second half, but could not hold it.

“They were good. They had a ton of speed up top,” said Brian Woeste, Notre Dame head coach. “They were solid in the midfield, very organized everywhere. All those kids are high-level club players. There’s not a whole lot to look at with them and pick apart.”

Riley Robertson and Jane Schuh scored the Notre Dame goals with Leah Young and Hannah Holocher tallying assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Joelle Hentz played the entire game and made 15 saves for the Pandas.

“It was a really good game,” Hentz said. “My back line was really organized up top. I just read the shooter. Timing is the most important thing for me – timing my dives, when I should come out.”

Notre Dame travels to Ohio to face the Loveland Tigers (4-1-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Holy Cross wins third straight September Slam

The Holy Cross Indians won their third consecutive September Slam Tournament at Town and Country in Wilder because Scott’s new gym floor is not ready.

Holy Cross has won 17 straight in the tournament dating back to 2020.

“It’s amazing because we work so hard in practice. Not every team gets that,” Holy Cross senior Julia Hunt said. “I feel that’s what builds our team chemistry. We have a small school so we see each other around in the hallways. When you see someone, you say, ‘Hey.’ That also portrays onto the court.”

Holy Cross (11-1) knocked off Campbell County, 2-0 (25-18, 25-20) to win the championship. The Indians had 27 kills, four blocks, 25 assists, 21 digs and seven aces in the win. Hunt had 18 kills, two blocks, six digs and three aces to lead the way.

But Hunt had some help. Olivia Gangwish had a team-high eight digs with freshman setter Lucy Lenihan recording 16 assists and three kills. Olivia McHenry had eight assists and Braelyn Romanello added four kills.

“I think our communication as a team has grown since the beginning of the season,” McHenry said. “We’ve been growing as a team every practice day in and day out. We just have to continue to work.”

Holy Cross had to survive the pool play games to make it to the championship game. The Indians downed Oldham County, 2-1 (15-25, 25-21, 15-9) then Scott, 2-1 (25-20, 22-25, 15-13) earlier in the day.

“It took us a minute. Even though we’re senior-heavy, we have a lot of kids that are new to varsity,” said Jill Hunt, Holy Cross head coach. “I think they had to believe that they could do it before they actually showed up to do it. Preseason was hard. We spent a lot of time with two-a-days. We did all kinds of things we don’t normally do at Holy Cross to try to get them prepared because we knew it was going to be a different dynamic.”

Campbell County (5-5) won four out of five in the tournament. The Camels had 15 kills, four blocks, four aces, 20 digs and 13 assists in the championship game. Ella Thorwarth led Campbell County with nine digs with Hope Hamilton and Ava Crowl recording seven and six assists, respectively, and A lon McIntyre had a team-high nine digs. Lexi Scharold and Emma Manser had five kills and two solo blocks each.

“It’s about controlling our side and understanding our side is the only side that matters. We need to put the ball over and keeping it on their side for (opponents) to make errors,” said Mikah Freppon, Campbell County head coach. “I’m unbelievably proud of them for this. They took a huge step.”

The Camels bested Beechwood, 2-1 (26-24, 16-25, 15-13) then Simon Kenton, 2-1 (25-16, 21-25, 15-8) after beating Boone County and Highlands on Friday to finish 4-0 in pool play. Teams played four pool play games over two days then faced the team that finished in the same place in the other pool.

“I think it’s really big,” Manser said. “Our season has been a bit slow so far. So getting these big wins is important for us moving on in the season.”

Simon Kenton (9-2) took out Oldham County, 2-0 (25-10, 25-21) in the second-place game. This marked the second win over the Colonels (7-4) this year for Simon Kenton.
