See below from the Week 6 on the gridiron that was.
Each week, we’ll provide the standouts from Friday night. The top passers, rushers, receivers, defensive and kicking standouts.
We’ll also look at 10 things to take away from the week.
Here goes…
10 takeaways
— No winless seasons! Congratulations to the Holmes and St. Henry football teams for breaking into the win columns and ensuring no team in NKY will go winless this year.
— Dixie Heights’ Mason Fields completed five passes in Friday’s 62-19 victory over Scott. Four of them went for touchdowns from 62, 75, 63 and 38 yards. Fields is now 12th in the state with 1,288 passing yards.
— Blowout Friday in Northern Kentucky. Of the 15 games played featuring NKY teams, only three of them were decided by 10 points or less. The average margin of victory was 31.6 points.
— 6-0 vs 6-0 this week when Lloyd Memorial hosts Bourbon County in a Class 3A, 5th District battle. Winner more than likely will earn the No. 1 seed in the district for the postseason.
— The RPI ratings are out for their initial rankings. In 6A, Ryle is No. 10, Campbell County No. 18 and Simon Kenton No. 19. In 5A, Cooper is No. 13, Dixie Heights is No. 23, Scott is No. 24, Conner is No. 27 and Boone County is No. 29. In 4A, Highlands is No. 8 and Covington Catholic is No. 11. In 3A, Lloyd Memorial is No. 7. In 2A, Beechwood is No. 5, St. Henry is No. 33 and Walton-Verona is No. 37. In 1A, Holy Cross is No. 7, Bellevue is No. 12, Newport is No. 14, Newport Central Catholic is No. 17, Bishop Brossart is No. 18, Ludlow is No. 23 and Dayton is No. 26. The importance of this starts in the third round of the playoffs, when homefield is determined by RPI ratings.
— With back-to-back 200-plus yard passing games, Cooper’s Cam O’Hara and the 11,000-yard career passing yards watch is back on. He’s currently at 9,882 passing yards. The latest the KHSAA record goes to is 2021, as of that time, only five had cleared the 11,000 passing yard career mark. O’Hara needs 1,118 yards in four regular season games and however deep they go in the postseason to do it.
— With three straight 100-yard receiving games, Simon Kenton’s Grayson Harris is now tied for third in the state with 630 receiving yards. He has 26 receptions for 630 yards and five touchdowns.
— Not one, not two, not three, not four, but five touchdowns for Beechwood’s Tyler Fryman in Friday’s 68-6 victory over Owen County. Fryman caught three touchdown passes, ran for another score and returned a punt for a touchdown as well.
— How about St. Henry’s Caden Kunstek? He ran for 243 yards on 26 carries in the program’s first ever varisty win. I saw him run against Bellevue earlier this season and he runs hard!
— CovCath-Highlands week! Get your minds right. Winner most likely gets the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A, 5th District. The two could very well meet again come the third or fourth round of the playoffs. A lot at stake come Friday night in Fort Thomas.
