The Highlands Bluebirds and Cooper Lady Jaguars met in a huge battle between two 9th Region contenders at Union.

Cooper (18-5 overall) held Senior Day for its four seniors in pitcher Amber Chaney, Hanna Hollis, Miami (Ohio) University commit Dylan Scott and catcher Gweny Wessling. But the Bluebirds (14-10) used their hot bats to build a nice lead and hold on for a 10-7 win.

Highlands had five errors to three for Cooper. The Lady Jaguars had four unearned runs to none for the Bluebirds.

Highlands batted an amazing .500 (17 for 34) in the win. The Bluebirds had not forgotten the Lady Jaguars beat them twice last year at Winkler Field and ended their season with a 7-3 loss in the region quarterfinals.

“That is a really, really good team over there (Cooper),” said Milt Horner, Highlands Head Coach. “We’ve worked on some hitting and it paid off some. We hit the ball hard, made some base running mistakes that cost us. We probably should have put more runs on the board. It would have made it less painful at the end. We hit up and down the line-up. It proves to the girls they can play with anybody.”

Sophomore center fielder and lead-off hitter Bailey Markus led the way going 4 for 5 with a double and three runs scored. Sophomore catcher Michelle Barth went 2 for 4 with a double, home run, four RBI and one run scored. Senior shortstop Anna Greenwell went 3 for 4 with a double, home run, four RBI and three runs scored.

“The way everyone came out and jumped on (pitches), it just pushed the momentum up,” Barth said. “It just clicked. It showed us what we are capable of.”

The top six batters for Highlands had at least two hits. Eighth grade second baseman Morgan Pompilio went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Junior third baseman Carly Cramer went 2 for 5. Senior Eleanor Todd cranked a solo home run in the top of the third to put Highlands up 7-2.

Junior pitcher Kennedy Baioni (8-6) pitched into the sixth inning. She struck out three, walked one and allowed two earned runs. Eighth grader Kaitlyn Dixon finished the game striking out two, walking two and allowing one earned run.

“They attacked,” Horner said of Baioni and Dixon. “Kennedy has been pitching great lately. We had some plays get away from us in the field also.”

All three pitchers pitched for Cooper. Chaney (9-1) and Hollis pitched one inning each before junior Kendall Blau pitched the final five innings. Chaney and Blau struck out two each.

Cooper batted .387 (12 for 31) overall. Chaney went 3 for 5 with a double, RBI and run scored. Sophomore second baseman Ava Scott went 3 for 4 with one run scored. Blau went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI with junior third baseman Ashley Chaney going 2 for 4 with a double. Dylan Scott scored twice.

The first five batters had hits in the top of the first for Highlands. Markus and Pompilio singled with Greenwell doubling in Markus and Barth doubling in Pompilio. Baioni then singled in Greenwell to put Highlands up 3-0.

But Cooper scored twice in the bottom of the inning to cut the Highlands lead to 3-2. Amber Chaney doubled and scored on a Highlands error. Blau then doubled in Dylan Scott. Ashley Chaney then singled. But Markus threw to Barth to nail Blau at the plate preventing the tying run from scoring.

Highlands responded with three runs in the top of the second to go up 6-2. Markus doubled and moved to third when Pompilio singled. Greenwell then belted a home run to center.

After Todd’s home run in the third, Markus singled and Pompilio laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. Following a Greenwell walk, Barth homered to center making the score 10-2 Highlands.

Cooper scored twice in the bottom of the third. The Scott sisters recorded singles with one out and Wessling reached on an error scoring Ava Scott. Blau then singled in Dylan scott to make the score 10-4 Highlands.

Cooper made it 10-5 in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Emily Schmeltz singled and moved to second when eighth grade outfielder Ainsley Scroggie laid down a sacrifice bunt and scored when Amber Chaney singled.

The Lady Jaguars made it 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth. Wessling walked and moved to third when Blau reached on an error. Childress then laid down a sacrifice bunt scoring Wessling.

Cooper had a chance to cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Amber Chaney singled and took second on a Highlands error. Ava Scott then singled her to third and took second on the throw. But Dixon came in and got Dylan Scott to pop out to Greenwell and struck out Wessling.

“I think it helps that I know that all the people on the field have my back,” Dixon said. “Even the people in the dugout have confidence in me knowing that I can make a difference in the game. I know that I’ve put in a lot of work outside of school practice. I know that I have to take my brain and heart out of it and know that I have faith I can do it.”

The Lady Jaguars got one more in the bottom of the seventh. Blau walked and Ashley Chaney doubled freshman pinch runner Grace Cline to third. Schmeltz hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Cline and Ashley Chaney moved to third. After Scroggie walked to bring the tying run to the plate, Dixon got Amber Chaney to pop out to Baioni at first.

“Anytime we got some momentum, Highlands made plays,” said Rusty Scott, Cooper Head Coach. “We’ve been on a winning streak. Maybe the girls needed a wake-up call. Highlands was the perfect team for that to happen against. We left some fat balls over the plate. I know what Anna Greenwell can do with them.”

Both teams play again Wednesday. Highlands travels to Dayton (5-10) and Cooper plays host to Bishop Brossart (8-11) at 5 p.m.

Softball:

Ryle 5, Boone County 3:

The Lady Raiders (13-11) built a 5-0 lead and held on for the 33rd District win over the Lady Rebels (8-13).

Ryle is 2-3 in district seed games and still has a chance at the second seed in the district tournament. Boone County finished 0-6 in district seed games and will be the fourth seed.

Both teams had one error. But none of them led to unearned runs.

Ryle batted .353 (12 for 34) in the win. Junior shortstop Avery Parsons went 3 for 3 with two RBI. Junior first baseman Grace Tranbargar went 3 for 4 with two doubles and senior center fielder Grace Morgan went 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice. Junior second baseman Aaliyah Kaseke had a double and batted in two.

“The girls came out and hit the ball well. All of our outs were hard out,” said Jarret Goddard, Ryle Head Coach. “We had a couple pop flys. But the girls did a really nice job staying back and hitting line drives. It just so happened that a lot of our line drives were right at somebody. I’m excited for where we’re going now.”

Sophomore Maddie Goddard (10-6) pitched a complete game helping Ryle complete the season sweep. She struck out six, walked three and allowed three earned runs.

“We did well making the routine plays,” said Brooklyn Roland, Ryle eighth grade left fielder. “With every throw in practice, we step into it. We’ve put it together.”

Boone County batted .231 (6 for 26) overall. Junior shortstop Harper Kinman hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior KB Irwin (5-8) pitched a complete game for Boone County. She struck out two, walked two and allowed five earned runs.

Conner 10, Scott 1:

The Lady Cougars (9-6) knocked off the Lady Eagles (11-12) snapping Scott’s five-game winning streak. Conner has won both meetings this year.

Scott had two errors to none for Conner. The Lady Cougars scored two unearned runs.

“We wanted to make sure we came out and played some good ball,” said Shawn Sproles, Conner Head Coach. “Our defense did a pretty good job. We had some hits at the right time. We were able to advance some runners and so forth.”

Conner batted .320 (8 for 25) overall. Sophomore first baseman Jalyn Cain went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and one run scored to lead the way. Junior center fielder Keira Holeman went two for 4 with three RBI and senior shortstop Alex Cobble added a triple scoring once.

“I feel both teams battled,” said Aaliyah Secrest, Conner sophomore right fielder. “I feel (Scott) had some innings where they put the ball in play. We were there and made the outs. We’ve worked on routine plays and we’ve nailed them down pretty well.”

Sophomore Mollie Sharp (7-4) threw a complete game for Conner. She struck out 12, walked two and allowed one earned run.

Scott batted .192 (5 for 26) in the loss. Freshman center fielder Elise Manhardt had a double. Sophomore pitcher Emma Scribner (10-8) threw a complete game striking out three, walking nine and allowing eight earned runs.

Conner plays host to Grant County (9-10) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Scott plays host to Campbell County (8-7) in a crucial 37th District seed game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Campbell County 5, Fleming County 4:

The Camels (8-7) outlasted the visiting Panthers (8-18) from the 16th Region with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“We’ve not really been in those up and down games where you’re behind then ahead then behind. It went back and forth,” said Sandi Kitchen, Campbell County Head Coach. “I was getting my head set to play the international tie breaker (runner on second to start extra innings) because Fleming County came from such a long way if we didn’t win it that inning. Their pitcher was throwing pretty good speed and I felt we adjusted well to it. Defensively, we had a ball I felt we should have caught in the outfield. But we came back and pulled through that. When you can win those tight games, I feel that shows maturity. I was pleased with that.”

Seventh grade right fielder Josie Feebeck and senior center fielder Bella Bastin led off the inning with consecutive walks. Feebeck then advanced to third on a wild pitch and Bastin stole second. Eighth grade third baseman Hope Hamilton then hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Feebeck to win the game.

The Camels fell behind 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but came back to take the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth before the Panthers tied it in the top of the seventh. Hamilton doubled to left scoring freshman second baseman Moriah Price before junior Paige Stewart lined out to center scoring Bastin.

“I feel like we learned a lot from this win how we can keep our energy up in the dugout,” said Emily Nadeau, Campbell County junior first baseman. “I feel like our energy was up no matter if we scored or not. I also feel like our hitters were consistent at the plate and our bats came alive when we needed them in the final inning. The pitcher threw more outside balls.”

Campbell County outhit Fleming County, 9-5. Fleming County committed one error leading one Camel run and the Camels had none. Hamilton went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double, home run, three RBI and one run scored with Stewart adding a double and two RBI. Bastin scored twice.

Stewart pitched the first four innings for Campbell County striking out two, walking three and allowing two earned runs and just one hit. Junior Alex Leicht (1-4) earned the win pitching the last three striking out none, walking one and allowing four hits and two earned runs.

Senior Audrey Pollard (6-4) earned the win pitching a complete game. She struck out 11, walked one and allowed five hits and three earned runs. Pollard also went 3 for 3 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI.

“Our focus the entire game was to put the bat on the ball and make the plays in the field,” said Natalie Meadows, Walton-Verona Head Coach. “They did both. That’s for sure.”

Walton Verona batted .290 (9 for 31) overall. Senior catcher Lacey Alford went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI. Sophomore Demi Lavon had a triple and scored twice with sophomore first baseman Addison Svec doubling and scoring one run.

“We kind of hit the reset button, had a team talk, went out and did our best,” Svec said. “We probably had one of the best games we’ve ever had overall.”

Williamstown committed seven errors to one for Walton-Verona. The Bearcats scored six unearned runs and allowed none.

Walton-Verona travels to Carroll County (1-11) on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.

“We came in and took care of business on all three phases,” said Brad Arlinghaus, Conner Head Coach. “Brody Mangold pitched a good game. We hit the ball well. We had some great two-strike approaches, got some timely hits then we caught the baseball.”

Conner junior Brody Mangold (5-0) earned the win pitching into the seventh inning. He struck out seven, walked two and allowed one earned run. Senior Tyler Parsons finished the game.

The Cougars batted .333 (9 for 27) and made no errors. Senior catcher Briggs Yeunger went 2 for 2 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored. “He’s a good pitcher,” Yeunger said of Allen. “When he hits his spots, he’s tough. It was about getting him to throw as many pitches as he could. I drew two walks. I wanted him to pitch the ball into my zone and hit the ball where I want.”

The Bearcats batted .222 (6 for 27) in the loss. Junior first baseman Lance Coleman and sophomore Bryce Corpus both went 2 for 3. Junior catcher Ethan Hager had a double.

Conner travels to Campbell County (15-9) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Walton-Verona takes on Bishop Brossart (14-10-1) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Ryle 13, Simon Kenton 9:

The Raiders (11-11) ventured to Independence and outlasted the Pioneers (13-9).

Ryle trailed 4-1 after three innings but exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth to go up 9-4. The Raiders led 11-9 after five but added on one in each of the final two innings.

“We did a good job of hitting the ball. We barreled the ball a couple times,” said Joe Aylor, Ryle Head Coach. “We did a good job of getting runners over, getting them in, sacrificing ourselves for the good of the team. We kept our feet on the pedal the entire game and continuing where we need to continue.”

Senior Brayden Stewart went 2 for 3 at the plate with a home run, double, three RBI and two runs scored. The big news for Ryle though is he pitched in relief in the game for the first time this season coming off an injury. Stewart struck out one, walked two and allowed four earned runs.

“He is off of his protocol,” Aylor said. “He’s just getting some innings here and there. Obviously when you’re returning one of the best pitchers in the region, it helps. Once he gets settled in and figures some things out, I think he adds some depth to our pitching rotation that can help us compete come postseason.”

Freshman Dylan McIntrye (3-3) earned the win for the Raiders pitching the first three innings striking out two, walking none and allowing three earned runs. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, RBI and one run scored.

“We took advantage of all the opportunities we got,” McIntyre said. “We put the ball in play and forced them to make plays. We keep working hard every day.”

Covington Catholic 21, Cooper 5:

The Colonels (14-10) exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh to pull away and made no errors. They scored seven unearned runs off three Jaguar errors.

“(Cooper) beat us earlier in the year (4-3 on April 7),” said Bill Krumpelbeck, CovCath Head Coach. “I know they’re missing a bunch of people. They’re missing some starters and battling some issues. We’re kind of battling that as well. We’re young and making a lot of mistakes. We have to take every game we can get.”

Senior left fielder Evan Myers went 3 for 4 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Freshman shortstop Jackson Reardon went 3 for 6 with one RBI and two runs scored. CovCath had not won any games that seniors Luke Lenhof, Will Burke or Colin Gastright did not start until this game. Sophomore Eli Wagner pitched the first inning before junior Chris Young (1-1) came into the game pitching six innings striking out two and allowing just two hits.

“We’ve improved a lot. We’ve had a lot of freshmen and sophomores step up in the infield and make plays. It’s been a difference-maker,” Young said. “(The senior pitchers) do a great job of pounding the zone and throwing a lot of strikes just getting guys out. Something Coach (Krumpelbeck) harps on a lot – throwing first-pitch strikes and getting ahead. That’s something I’m incorporating in my game.”

Cooper (7-17) batted .250 (7 for 28) in the loss. Senior left fielder Cameron Kuehn went 2 for 3 with one run scored to lead the Jaguars. Sophomore Eric Eaton started for Cooper pitching into the fourth inning. Sophomore Andrew Ketron, senior William Reimann and senior Emmit Sipple pitched for the Jaguars.

Dixie Heights has 10 seniors on the roster. Senior Jason Kreinbrink scored a run in the win.

Campbell County batted .375 (9 for 24) in the win. Gross went 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Senior second baseman Tyler Fowler went 2 for 2 with one run scored. Vineyard had two RBI.

Senior Owen Eilerman started for St. Henry pitching three innings striking out two and allowing three hits. But the Camels pulled ahead after he left the game. Sophomore Carson Shea (1-1) took the loss striking out one, walking three and allowing three hits and two earned runs.
