The Boone County Rebels had high hopes entering the season with a senior-laden squad.

The experience has paid off so far as host Boone County handled Highlands, 82-60. That marked Boone County’s first win over Highlands since a 67-50 win on Dec. 1, 2017.

“We’ve got some guys that have stepped up and been leaders,” said Nathan Browning, Boone County head coach. “They’re working hard in practice and making sure other guys are working hard in practice. The maturity is showing with them. I think they realize this is it for them so they’re doing everything they can to have as much success as we can.”

Boone County (2-0) put four players in double figures. Mason Hall led the way with 26 points and Maddox Jones followed with 15. Elijah Bodkin scored 14 and Hunter Moore added 11.

“Things are clicking well now. We’re not just buying into the offensive side,” Jones said. “We’re also buying into the defensive side because defense is what wins games. We did our no middle defense forcing them to drive baseline and make tougher passes that led to a lot of turnovers. Our help did the work.”

Highlands (1-1) put two players in double figures. Nathan Vinson led the way with 23 points and Brayden Moeves scored 11.

Highlands plays host to the Cincinnati (Ohio) Trailblazers Home School team on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Boone County travels to Tates Creek on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
