The atmosphere in Independence felt more like late May than early May, but that’s the expectation whenever Walton-Verona and Simon Kenton face off, no matter the sport.
Fueled by the energy of the rivalry and with the top seed in the 32nd District Tournament on the line, Thursday night carried the feel of a postseason game. With the possibility of another meeting between the two looming later this month, the intensity matched the moment, but this time, it was Walton-Verona that prevailed, defeating Simon Kenton 3-0.
From the first pitch, with both dugouts making their voices heard and student sections packed behind them, the atmosphere signaled what kind of night it would be.
“It’s so cool because every other high school sport has awesome energy, like a football stadium on Friday night or a packed basketball gym where it’s so loud the referees can’t even hear the student sections yelling at each other,” Walton-Verona head coach Andrew Sien said. “Baseball is usually such a quiet game, so to see young kids come out and support the other student-athletes, it’s cool. There’s just good juice, and it’s a fun rivalry.”
EKU commit and Walton-Verona ace Bronson Corpus carried that energy throughout the night, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts.
“I was really thinking, ‘Go out and do this for my team,’” Corpus said. “I absolutely feel the atmosphere too. It just gives me more fuel to throw strikes and get outs.”
Simon Kenton finished 2-for-25 at the plate, with Jordan Johnson and Charlie Overton recording the Pioneers’ only hits. Overton’s single in the third inning marked Simon Kenton’s first hit of the night, as the team managed just two total bases.
“Tonight was a classic district seed game,” Simon Kenton head coach Brady Smiley said. “When you’ve got one game and they’ve got one arm who’s really good, it’s going to be a tough night. You tip your cap to Corpus, who played a heck of a game.”
Walton-Verona leadoff hitter William Hurles helped set the tone early, drawing a walk before letting out a celebratory roar toward first base as the Bearcats’ dugout erupted.

Hurles later came around to score on a single from Cole Dryden, giving Walton-Verona an early 1-0 lead after the opening inning.
Simon Kenton ace Luke Gabbard pitched four innings, allowing six hits and three runs while walking four and striking out five.

Gabbard settled in during the second and third innings, striking out four batters across the two frames, but Hurles struck again later in the game with a two-run single into right field that provided the Bearcats with their final runs of the night.
Caleb Uhl came on in relief for the final three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four with no walks.
Corpus and Walton-Verona’s defense continued to apply pressure throughout the night, and fittingly, the final out came on a line drive right back to Corpus, who secured the catch himself.
It marked the first time Simon Kenton had been shut out since April 16, 2025, against Dixie Heights, and for the second straight season Walton-Verona claimed the district seeding battle between the two rivals.
Last season, however, the Pioneers answered with a win over the Bearcats in the district championship game.
Another matchup in that same setting could be in store once again.
As the No. 1 seed, Walton-Verona will face Williamstown in the district semifinals, while No. 2 seed Simon Kenton will take on Grant County. If both teams advance, another rivalry showdown will await in the championship.
For Walton-Verona, Thursday’s win only adds confidence heading into a potential rematch.
“It gives us a lot of fuel,” Corpus said. “We’re ready, we’re hungry for a district championship. We haven’t won it since 2021.”
For Simon Kenton, the loss serves as motivation of its own.
“I think we’ve got a good team,” Smiley said. “They got us last year in the seed game and we got them back in the championship game. I fully expect to do the same thing. I’ve got confidence in my guys.”
If Thursday was just the appetizer, the district tournament might be where this rivalry finally decides the main course.
