The Northern Kentucky Youth Football League announced the creation of a girls-only flag football league.

The announcement follows the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s decision to sanction girls’ flag football as a championship sport in March. Kentucky became the 23rd state nationwide to sanction the sport.

As such, the NKYFL announced that its first girls flag football season will be open to girls aged 8 to 12 from seven different counties across Greater Northern Kentucky.

“I think it’s going to be big,” NKYFL President Curt Spencer told LINK nky.

The league’s inaugural season will kick off this fall, running from August through October, with signups open throughout the summer.

Founded in 1958, the NKYFL is Northern Kentucky’s oldest continuously operating youth football league. The league is comprised of 19 member organizations that serve families across Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Gallatin, Pendleton and Grant counties, offering tackle football, flag football and cheerleading programs for athletes ages 5 to 12.
