LINK nky is once again excited to partner with OrthoCincy Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and announce the highly popular Team of the Week and Team of the Season awards are back for 2025-26 sports seasons!

To be the winning team, fan votes play a heavy role, along with consideration from our sports team here at LINK.

Nominations are reader-submitted or recommended by our sports team. Our Team of the Week program honors all local sports at all levels, whether it’s youth or adult-oriented recreation, high school or college, professional or amateur.

The new school year has added to the awards program. OrthoCincy Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and LINK nky are excited to expand in addition to the weekly winners, the program will be including three winners for Team of the Season and one overall winner for Team of the Year for the 2024-25 sports seasons.

New this year for the program is the addition of the Team of the Season (TOTS) and Team of the Year (TOTY) awards. Sports seasons are considered fall, winter and spring for the purpose of this awards program. At the conclusion of each sports season, an overall TOTS winner will be chosen from all previous TOTW winners for that season. Their school will also receive a $500 scholarship to be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.

Finally, the program culminates by selecting one TOTY from the three TOTS award winners. Online and print articles will again be published, a large commemorative plaque will be presented and the school will receive an additional $500 scholarship to be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.

The call for nominations, voting and winning announcement for each will follow the same format as the TOTW.

CAMPBELL COUNTY GIRLS SOCCER

Last week, the Camels claimed their first 10th Region title since 2021 defeating George Rogers Clark 1-0 (4-3 in penalties).

They didn’t allow a single goal in during the tournament, downing Montgomery County 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Harrison County 8-0 in the semifinals

Ryan Weghorn sealed the deal in the championship with her 15th goal of the season. Jozie Holmes is leading the team with 24. Kennedy Crowley has 10.

Holmes and Caitlin Crowley have a team-leading nine assists each, Meryem Gonulates with eight. Goalkeepers Abi Medaugh and Morgan Roomes have a combined 114 saves.

Campbell County stays in Claryville for first round of the KHSAA State Tournament where they will take on the winner of Region 12, Boyle County on Monday.

VILLA MADONNA VOLLLEYBALL

It’s been awhile since the Vikings were on the losing end.

Since Sep. 24, they’re 8-0, capping off their regular season with a victory over district foe, Dixie Heights. Over that stretch, they won 21 of 23 sets played.

Leading the team are Maya Kondik with 266 kills and 28 blocks, Catherine Gifford with 379 assists and 72 aces and Victoria Sebald with 176 digs.

Villa Madonna will have a rematch with Dixie in the semifinals of the 34th District tournament Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. at Lloyd Memorial.

SCOTT GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

The last week of the regular season meets in cross country is usually a really good tune-up heading into the region meet.

For Scott’s girls team, they have to be feeling pretty good after taking home first place in the KTCCA Meet of Champions in Lexington on Saturday.

Not only is the meet stacked with some of the top teams in the state, it’s also home to the state cross country meet. The Eagles finished first with 35 points, clearing the 14-team field by 30 points with Beechwood coming in second.

Scott was led by their top five runners finishing in the top 12. Evann McElfresh placed second in a time of 22:03, Helen Schafer right behind her in third at 22:05. Then the trio of Emily Klim, Ansley Lindloff and Sylvia Fasciotto placed 10th, 11th and 12th.

They’ll look to continue their momentum heading into Saturday’s Class 3A, Region 5 meet at Williamstown.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC BOYS SOCCER

The Colonels were the favorite to win the 9th Region all year and backed it up on Saturday with a 3-1 victory in the region championship game.

CovCath downed Highlands in the title bout as their impressive offensive output continued, scoring 13 goals in three region tournament games.

Their run started with a 6-1 victory over Newport Central Catholic followed by a semifinal victory over two-time champ Ryle, 4-2.

In Saturday’s title game, the Colonels came out with a fury, scoring three first half goals on their way to a title. It’s their first region championship since 2021.

David Do was named tournament MVP, while Tyler Turnpaugh, Tanner Robertson and Ryan Burke were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Colonels will look to continue their season with a first round state tournament matchup against Henry Clay on Tuesday in Park Hills.

WALTON-VERONA FOOTBALL

The Bearcats have won two straight games in an attempt to get their season back on track after a 1-5 start.

They’ve defeated Carroll County and Gallatin County in back-to-back weeks, combining a winning score of 58-8.

In the win over Gallatin County, Avery Howe threw for 220 yards and five touchdowns while the defense had eight tackles for loss and an interception in the 35-8 victory.

Michael Oldfield hauled in five passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns to lead the receiving corps, Andrew Lynn and CJ Holt also catching touchdown passes.

Defensively, Alexander Yutze led the way with 10 tackles, Cooper Burch and Gavin Roberts with nine apiece. Lynn and Brayden Donato had the interceptions.

The Bearcats will look to keep it rolling Friday in a matchup at Owen County to determine the No. 3 seed in the district.
