Nominations are reader-submitted or recommended by our sports team. Our Team of the Week program honors all local sports at all levels, whether it’s youth or adult-oriented recreation, high school or college, professional or amateur.
The new school year has added to the awards program. OrthoCincy Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and LINK nky are excited to expand in addition to the weekly winners, the program will be including three winners for Team of the Season and one overall winner for Team of the Year for the 2024-25 sports seasons.
New this year for the program is the addition of the Team of the Season (TOTS) and Team of the Year (TOTY) awards. Sports seasons are considered fall, winter and spring for the purpose of this awards program. At the conclusion of each sports season, an overall TOTS winner will be chosen from all previous TOTW winners for that season. Their school will also receive a $500 scholarship to be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.
Finally, the program culminates by selecting one TOTY from the three TOTS award winners. Online and print articles will again be published, a large commemorative plaque will be presented and the school will receive an additional $500 scholarship to be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year.
The call for nominations, voting and winning announcement for each will follow the same format as the TOTW.

CALVARY CHRISTIAN BOYS SOCCER

The Cougars have hit a stride, winning all four of their games last week.
They shutout Frankfort Christian (5-0), and followed it up with wins over Grant County (2-1), Holmes (3-1) and Mars Hill (Ohio), 2-0. Calvary has outscored their opponents 52-20 this season and sport a 9-3-2 record.
Joshua Ruwe has been on a tear, leading the Cougars with 28 goals. Jackson Reagor has eight and leads the team with 11 assists. Gavin Van Winkle follows closely behind with seven goals, Collin Duty second on the team with eight assists.
Jonah Rozkowski has made an impact with 102 saves, averaging 7.3 a game and a 1.4 goals against average.
BISHOP BROSSART GIRLS SOCCER

The ‘Lady Stangs are on to the Elite 8 of the All “A” Classic after a 2-0 victory over Beechwood on Sept. 11.
They followed up the All “A” win with a 3-1 victory over St. Henry on Saturday, improving their record to 6-3-2 on the year and currently hold the top RPI rating in the 10th Region.
They’ve spread the wealth around in their success, 11 different players scoring a goal led by Rachel Shewmaker with eight on the season. Kylie Smith has six goals, Lexi Braun with four. Zoey Woosley leads the team in assists with six, Shewmaker and Smith with five while Larah Callahan has four. Madeline Broering leads the team in goal, collecting 76 saves on the season with three shutouts and a 1.7 goals against average.
Before they continue play in the All “A” state quarterfinals against Hazard on Saturday, they’ll face Campbell County in a big 37th District matchup on Wednesday. If Brossart were to win on Saturday against Hazard at Louisville Collegiate, they’d advance to Saturday’s semifinals at 6 p.m., with the championship on Sunday at 11 a.m.
RYLE VOLLEYBALL

The Raiders did something no other public school has since at least 2002 on Saturday, beat Assumption out of Louisville.
Ryle is the first public school to pull off the feat since the KHSAA website tracked games on the website, defeating Assumption, 2-0 (26-24, 25-21) in bracket play of the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Raiders moved to 11-0 in the victory, going 2-0 in pool play of the tournament, knocking out No. 1 seed Assumption before falling in the semifinals to Sacred Heart and Ursula Academy (Ohio) in the third place game.
Through eight games with stats, Lucy Trapp (91 kills), Layna Wilkinson (16 blocks), Morgan Heater (248 assists, 18 aces) and Ria Furuta (149 digs) were the team’s stat leaders in those categories. Their big week last week also included a district win over Cooper, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15).
Ryle looks to continue their strong start to the season with Dixie Heights on Thursday before they head down to Tates Creek in Lexington for a tournament this weekend.
NEWPORT FOOTBALL

The Wildcats are off to their first 3-0 start since 2019 after a 24-20 victory over Boone County on Friday.
A blocked punt resulted in a Keegan Farrell touchdown in the fourth quarter to give Newport the go-ahead score and keep them undefeated.
Friday’s game also marked their first home game in nearly three years after their stadium was condemned and took two years to reconstruct.
In the victory, Kyle Lee threw for 156 yards and a touchdown, Kendall Buck-Barber his main target as he hauled in three receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown. The defense showed its strength with three sacks, 12 tackles for loss and two forced turnovers. Sean Hurry accumulated 12 tackles, five of them for a loss and a sack. Jaylan Hartness added two sacks, Buck-Barber’s eight tackles to go with two tackles for loss and an interception.
Newport will look to make it 4-0 this week when they face Ludlow on the road.
