The three most often-heard words Saturday were “basket by Trammell.”
As in Winton Woods junior forward Daniah Trammell. Her 30 points helped the Warriors to a 56-54 win over Holy Cross at the Hoops for Harvest at Dixie Heights High School.
For the second straight night, Holy Cross (1-2) lost a lead.
Friday, the Indians led Ryle in the third quarter, 32-29 before falling, 60-51. Saturday’s loss was maybe more painful – the Indians led Winton Woods, 25-9 after one quarter and 35-21 at halftime – and then watched the Warriors outscore Holy Cross, 35-19, in the second half.
For the first four minutes, everything Holy Cross tried – worked.
Five Indians – Miyah Wimzie, Aumani Nelson, Julia Hunt, Aaliyah Hayes and Aniyah Carter, contributed to a 16-2 lead. One play stood out – with 4:50 left in the first, Wimzie drove baseline and found Hunt alone in the paint for a layup.
There was more: Nelson’s and-1, Alyssa Arlinghaus’ 3 and Hunt’s two free throws over the final 1:19.
Winton Woods – or more specifically Trammell – woke up in the third stanza. The Warriors’ 13-3 run featured Trammell’s seven points and Niyala Harmon’s two 3-pointers.
Hunt’s fadeaway 8-footer and free throws by Arlinghaus and Hunt gave Holy Cross a 42-39 lead after three quarters.
It took Trammell 50 seconds to put Winton Woods ahead to stay: four points meant a 43-42 lead.
Wimzie’s two free throws with 4.9 seconds left made it 55-54 Winton Woods, but Trammell’s free throw ended the scoring.
Holy Cross hosts Dixie Heights at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
