Cooper 49, Scott 7

The Jaguars (6-2) traversed the 275 loop for a 5A district matchup in an area that once was known for its lumber mills operated and owned by James Taylor, not the grammy award winning music artist, but that original founder of Newport, for an encounter at the Eagles Nest versus Scott (2-5).

Much like the the original road that was cleared for these mills, spanning across the budding metropolis’s of Winston Park and Sunny Acres, the Prowl cleared the way like Paul Bunyon through a forest by racking up 49 points in the first 17 minutes of play and cruising to a 49-7 victory.

The scoring started with 7:09 left in the first when Keagan Maher ran one in from three yards out. New Jaguar Jaidan Combs then found the end zone on a two-yard pass from Cam O’Hara, O’Hara tossing three touchdowns on the night.

Maher added another rushing score followed by an Austin Alexander 59-yard touchdown reception. Maher’s third score came on a 37-yard rush, O’Hara hitting Isaiah Johnson for a 22-yard touchdown. The Jaguars seventh touchdown came from DSan Ritchie, making it 49-0 with 4:55 left before halftime.

The Eagles lone score came in the final seconds of the 3rd quarter when sophomore QB Trey Cook found senior Dylan Giffen in the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown.

Maher had five carries for 67 yards, O’Hara throwing nine passes, completing seven of them for 136 yards.

The Jaguar defense limited the Eagles to 133 yards of offense on the evening.

Cook finished the night 13-of-27 for 90 yards. Junior Josh Johnson led all Eagle ball carries with 42 yards on 6 carries.

Next week the Jaguars host Boone County for Senior Night, while Scott travels to their Kenton County brethren, Dixie Heights.

Dixie Heights 42, Conner 15

The Colonels moved to 2-1 in Class 5A, District 6 action with the road win and kept their hopes of a first-round home playoff game alive.

Dixie Heights outgained Conner, 393-237 in total offense. Armani Gregg rushed for four touchdowns for the Colonels (3-4) and threw a touchdown pass to Tyson Beach. David Anderson added a rushing touchdown.

“It was a big win coming back from just a rough loss last week against Highlands. This was a must-win game for us honestly,” said Pat Burke, Dixie Heights head coach. “We went over in the rain and had to get after it. I thought our kids responded well this week. We got back on the winning side of things.”

Conner (4-4) fell to 1-2 in district play. Quarterback Wyatt Hatfield completed 10-of-15 passes for 117 yards with one touchdown pass to Elliot Bucher and an interception. Bucher had four receptions for 50 yards and Cordion Abernathy added a rushing touchdown.

“(Hatfield) is shifty. He makes some plays reading downfield, just flipping it to receivers,” Burke said. “You think you got him locked up and he’ll just flip it right over a defensive back’s head for a reception. We were able to manage him and then we had probably three or four third-down, fourth down big-time stops to get them off the field.”

Dixie Heights plays host to Scott (2-5) on Friday at 7 p.m. Conner plays at Highlands (6-1) at the same time.

Lloyd Memorial 50, Pendleton County 6

The Juggernauts opened Class 3A, District 5 action with a convincing road win to stay undefeated at 7-0.

Lloyd dominated in the rain, building a 43-0 halftime lead.

“It was a short week playing on a Thursday instead of a Friday so that was a bit of an odd thing,” said Kyle Niederman, Lloyd head coach. “We have fall break so we had (Thursday) off from school so there were a couple variables there. We had some things that we could have made excuses for, but didn’t. We came out and did what we needed to do.”

Lloyd Memorial had seven rushing touchdown in the win. Isaiah Sebastian and Yurii Collins Comer rushed for two each. Nishawn Golsby, Blake Remley and Ramondo Dixon had the other three.

Lloyd plays host to Lexington Catholic (2-4) in a critical district game Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Grant County 35, Holmes 8

The tough season continued for the Bulldogs on the road as the Braves won the battle for the first Class 4A, District 5 win for either team.

Holmes (0-8) has its bye week before traveling to Harrison County (4-2) on Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
