Football

Bellevue 34, Lynn Camp 20

Bellevue won its second in a row, knocking off the visitors from outside Corbin in southeast Kentucky, to even their record.

The Tigers built a 22-0 halftime lead and made it stand.

“We’re still getting there,” said Chad Montgomery, Bellevue head coach. “We’re not quite there with our habits. Really what we’re trying to do is improve every week. I know the expectation is to win. But like I told them, if we keep improving, the w’s are going to come. If we continue to do small things right and be good people in the classroom, in the locker room, it’s going to get us wins. We’re trying to build these kids up and let them know they are capable of these things. We’re building something special. That’s the nice thing is we haven’t played to our potential yet. Once we hit our potential, I’m really excited for what these kids can do.”

Both teams are 2-2 on the season. The Tigers won two games in a season for the first time since 2019 and won two in a row for the first time since winning four straight in 2018.

The Tigers outgained the Wildcats, 336-284 behind their young, but experienced offensive line. Running back Jordan Pendleton rushed for 172 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Tristan Woodyard carried the ball 13 times for 60 yards and one touchdowns and completed 3-of-6 passes for 80 yards, one touchdown and one interception. That touchdown pass went 60 yards to Peyton Hopper.

“The linemen have stepped up this year and played better,” Woodyard said. “We’re more experienced. We’re reading the right stuff and executing the right things.”

Defensively, Aiden Dickerson picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. Wyatt Messman led the Tigers with 12 tackles. Kayne Ross, Dickerson and Landon Corley had nine each with Pendleton and Will Lear recording sacks.

Bellevue has its bye week before taking on Gamble Montessori (Ohio) on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. back at Gilligan Stadium.

Notre Dame finishes runner-up in LIVT

The Notre Dame Pandas made it all the way to the gold championship, but lost for the first time this season to Assumption, 2-1.

Notre Dame (12-1) had 38 kills, 34 assists and 51 digs against the Rockets. Ava Tilden led the Pandas with 13 kills and Riley McCloskey, who just verbally committed to the University of Memphis, had 11 kills. Lauren Ott and Lizzy Larkins had 22 and eight kills respectively and Julia Grace had 18 digs.

Notre Dame beat St. Henry, 2-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19) in the Gold quarterfinals. The Pandas had 35 kills, 35 assists and 45 digs. McCloskey had 11 kills and Tilden nine with Larkins and Ott recording 17 and 13 assists respectively. Hannah Dannenberg and Grace had 11 digs each.

Notre Dame then beat Sacred Heart, 2-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-20) to make it to the title game. Notre Dame had 36 kills, 36 assists and 39 digs in the win. Larkins had 22 assists and Ott had 12 digs and 12 assists with Tilden recording nine digs. Grace Portwood had 10 kills and Audrey Dyas had seven.

“This tournament has a lot of the top teams, not only in this state, but from other areas. It really challenges us the entire weekend. You don’t have an easy match,” said Leslie Litmer, Notre Dame co-coach. “Club volleyball challenges you not only in skill, but how you can rebound to a next match whether you win or lose, and then what your stamina is. But I think our girls really enjoy it. They just enjoy the constant playing rather than the high school tournament, which is just a single game in a day outside of the state tournament. You just keep getting better. So I think that gives you more time to develop chemistry on the team.”

Notre Dame travels to St. Ursula (Ohio) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

500 wins for two area coaches

Over the weekend, Ryle head coach Tasha Lovins earned her 500th career win in the Louisville Volleyball Invitational Tournament and Highlands head coach Jim DeLong earned his in the Capital City Classic.
