NEWPORT BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

Newport’s boys basketball team won the Ninth Region championship for the first time since 2010 with victories over Beechwood (74-46), Lloyd Memorial (49-42) and Cooper (44-42) in punching their ticket to the state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Wildcats have won 12 games in a row entering the state tournament and got solid contributions from their starting five to win the Ninth at Truist Arena. Jabari Covington’s shot with 2.5 seconds remaining against Cooper broke a 42-42 tie and earned Newport the victory.

Lone senior Marquez Miller was named the tournament MVP while Taylen Kinney and James Turner were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Wildcats open up the Sweet 16 with Lyon County on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

COOPER ARCHERY TEAM

Cooper’s archery team won the Dixie Cup in Edgewood on March 10-11. The Jaguars shot a team score of 3,277 and edged Conner by three.

They were led by Thane Hudelson with a 294 as he finished first overall. Ryleigh Clabough placed third individually in the girls division with a 281, Baylee Hamm sixth in the girls with 278. Leah Vaughn was eighth in the girls division with a 275. Kayson Stone (277) and Nathan Strong (272) finished in the top 25 of the boys division, Stone in 13th, Strong in 22nd.

RYLE ARCHERY TEAM

Ryle’s archery team won the Walton-Verona State warmup on March 11 with a team score of 3,352 and defeating Simon Kenton by 24.

Ryle was led by Kennan Caudill with a 288 and finishing third overall in the boys division. Jared Evans finished fifth with a 287, Nathan Santimaw sixth with a 285 and Christian Wallace ninth with a 283. Ryle had seven boys finish in the top 20, Jacob Klette (282) 11th, Anthony Rieffer (278) 17th and Thomas Evans (277) 20th.

NKY NORSEMEN HOCKEY TEAM

The Northern Kentucky Norsemen hockey team won the Kentucky state championship in Louisville.

The Norsemen are made up of hockey players in high school across Northern Kentucky. The Norsemen are led by head coach Eric Kathman. This is the team’s third state title in the last seven years, winning in 2017 and ’19 as well.

The Norsemen will play next in Plymouth, Minnesota for the National high school tournament, March 23-27.

The team had the community come out to celebrate the teams success at the Northern Kentucky Ice Center in Crescent Springs.

Kathman has been coaching hockey for over 25 years and knows the excitement that exists around this hockey community in northern Kentucky but also feels the love from those who are part of the Norse family.
