But those who have followed sports in the 33rd District for a long time have seen it happen before and will see it again. The Cooper Jaguars baseball team (7-13 overall) threw a wrench in the plans for the Conner Cougars (20-3) to clinch an outright top seed in the 33rd District Tournament in a few weeks with a 5-4 win in Hebron.
Conner finishes 4-2 in district play and still appears headed for the top seed with a Ratings Percentage Index much higher than the other three opponents. But Cooper is 3-2 and could finish 4-2 in district play with a win at Boone County on May 6.
Both teams had eight hits in the game. But a huge difference came in the errors. Conner had three leading to four unearned Cooper runs and the Jaguars had one leading to no Cougar unearned runs.
Cooper junior designated hitter Chase Gartner had an outstanding game going 4 for 4 with a home run, double, four RBI and one run scored. Gartner gave Cooper a 2-0 lead in the top of the third hitting a two-run home run to right field scoring sophomore right fielder Mark Nowak. Nowak scored twice.
“I can’t say enough about the big hits,” said Scott Buckler, Cooper Head Coach. “Chase Gartner just keeps putting together at-bats doing little things (like) running the bases well, running from first to third. Guys running down the line just not giving up. We did all those little things to make those things pay. We have to do that with a team like that. That’s a heck of a team over there (in Conner).”
Gartner had another clutch hit in the top of the sixth. Cooper loaded the bases with two out after Nowak hit a grounder toward shortstop and senior left fielder Cameron Kuehn beat the throw to second on the Conner error.
Gartner worked the count full on Conner senior pitcher Tyler Parsons fouling off three straight pitches. But he smacked the eighth pitch down the line in right field scoring senior third baseman Jake Jennings and Kuehn to give Cooper a 4-3 lead.
“What was going through my mind is I have to get home,” Kuehn said. “This game means a lot to me. We’ve had some rough outings (against Conner). Scoring that run was a confidence boost not just to me but the entire game. I feel that carried us to the win.”
Nowak then scored on a wild pitch to put Cooper up 5-3. That run wound up being the difference in the game.
“We’re a good team when we catch the ball,” said Brad Arlinghaus, Conner Head Coach. “But when we give teams extra outs or boot the ball around, it’s a difference in the outcome in the game. Good teams take advantage of those opportunities. Cooper took advantage of those opportunities.”
Junior center fielder Ayden Lohr led Conner going 3 for 5 with two RBI. He had a clutch two-out hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth. Lohr singled to left scoring senior catcher Briggs Yuenger and junior designated hitter Jackson Bucks to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
Senior left fielder Cody Crawford finished 2 for 2 with a walk and Yeunger went 2 for 5 with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score. Yeunger scored twice.
Conner cut the early Cooper lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Senior shortstop Gage Testerman scored on a wild pitch.
Junior Trevor Ollier pitched into the fifth inning for Cooper striking out three, walking four and allowing four hits and three earned runs. But junior Logan Dean (2-0) completed the fifth and pitched the sixth to earn the win striking out one, walking one and allowing three hits and one earned run.
Senior Corbin Fletcher nailed down his first save of the year in the seventh inning. Senior second baseman Blaise Bowman grounded out before Lohr singled and Fletcher hit junior right fielder Brayden Stidham with a pitch. Lohr and Stidham recorded a double steal to get the potential game-winning run in scoring position before senior shortstop Gage Testerman walked to load the bases.
“I think that composure comes with his age and his demeanor,” Buckler said. “He’s a = naturally calm and cool dude. We’ve talked a lot about his change up, driving pitches and pitching with great technique. He’s really adopted that and really worked to develop what he has in such a short time. The conversation started in September. He continues to take step after step.”
But Fletcher left the bases loaded. He struck out Conner senior first baseman Kaden Early before Yeunger grounded out to Cooper junior shortstop James Crowe to end the game.
“I’ve always loved closing since I was little,” Fletcher said. “I feel like I was made for it. I know Conner is pretty good at hitting the ball. I wasn’t going to strike everyone out so I just pitched to contact. My team had my back.”
Conner left 16 guys on base in the game. The Cougars loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the second after senior third baseman Ethan Hite laid down a bunt single moving Crawford to third and Bucks to second. But Ollier struck out Bowman and Lohr then coaxing Stidham to ground out to Crowe at short.
“We just did not have good approaches,” Arlinghaus said. “(Fletcher) came in and threw strikes. You have to tip your cap to Fletcher. That’s a lot of guys to leave in scoring position. You’re not going to win too many games when you leave 16 guys on base.”
Sophomore Rex Richter started and pitched five innings. He struck out six, walked one and allowed just one earned run on six hits. Parsons (1-1) pitched the final two innings taking the loss. Parsons struck out one, walked one and allowed two hits and no earned runs.
Conner plays host to Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller (15-1) on Thursday at 5 p.m. Cooper takes on Simon Kenton (11-8) in the Bryan Stevenson Memorial Tournament on Friday at 6 p.m.
Ryle 5, Boone County 2:
The Raiders (10-10) finished 33rd District seed play 3-3 salvaging a split with the Rebels (6-13).
Ryle will be either the second or third seed in the district tournament at Conner in a few weeks. Boone County is 1-4 in district seed play and will be the fourth seed no matter the outcome in the home game against Cooper on May 6.
“We had a very good conversation after school,” said Joe Aylor, Ryle Head Coach. “This is where we’re at. We’re in a tough district. We know going into the district tournament that every team that we play has beat us and every team that we play we’ve beaten. I think you see teams that have been down in the past are competing with other teams and teams that have been up are down. We feel like the region is wide open to the point if we’re on, we can compete with anybody and if we’re off, we’re going to have a battle on our hands.”
The Ratings Percentage Index will be used to determine two seeds. Cooper could finish tied for first with Conner or tied with Ryle for second. The RPI ratings between Cooper, Ryle and Boone County are currently close.
Senior Josh Furtado (2-2) pitched a complete game to earn the win. He struck out 10, walked two and allowed just three hits and one earned run. Ryle made one error behind him leading to one Boone County unearned run.
“We knew (Wednesday) was a must-win situation, especially in the district,” Furtado said. “Moving forward, we’re going to have to stop playing (down) to our competition and instead, play our type of baseball, which is the baseball we played (Tuesday) and is the baseball we’ve been playing the past few weeks outside of a few outlier type of games. I think our offense and defense showed up.”
Ryle batted .296 (8 for 27) in the game. Junior center fielder Landon Sawyer went 2 for 3 with an RBI and walk. Freshman Dylan McIntyre went 2 for 4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior catcher Brayden Vice had a two-run double to give Ryle a 4-1 lead in the top of the third.
Sophomore Chris Henson pitched three innings taking the loss for the Rebels. He struck out four, walked one and allowed six hits and three earned runs. Senior Jason Williams pitched the last four striking out three, walking three and allowing two hits and one earned run.
“Chris does a nice job pitching and over at third base so we knew he was someone we couldn’t take lightly,” Aylor said. “(Furtado) had one of his best outings I’ve seen in two years. Hopefully, he’ll continue to settle in because he’s going to be a workhorse for us down the stretch.”
The Rebels had no one with any multi-hit games. But senior center fielder Issac Vest had a double and scored a run.
Ryle plays host to Highlands (12-10) on Saturday at Noon. Boone County plays host to Lloyd Memorial (9-11) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Beechwood 14, Dixie Heights 6:
The Tigers (18-2) rebounded from the Elder (Ohio) home loss and downed the host Colonels (12-7) for the second time this season.
Beechwood led 3-1 entering the top of the sixth. But the Tigers scored eight to go up 11-1 before Dixie Heights scored six in the bottom of the inning.
“It’s never as the final score (might indicate),” said Kevin Gray, Beechwood Head Coach. “They made nice plays and we were making nice plays. The pitchers were throwing strikes. We were limited on pitching because of the All A State quarterfinals. We want to have all hands on deck. We really hit it well, especially those last few innings.”
Junior Matt Kappes (3-0) pitched five innings to earn the win striking out four, walking none and allowing four hits and one earned run. Junior Landon Johnson finished the game striking out one, walking one and allowing three hits and four earned runs.
Beechwood batted .400 (12 for 30) overall. Senior first baseman Tanner Jackson went 2 for 2 with a home run, double, four RBI and one run scored. Junior catcher Brice Estep went 3 for 4 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Senior third baseman Jackson Roseburrough went 2 for 4 with one run scored. Junior Torin O’Shea and junior right fielder Cameron Boyd doubled. Boyd scored twice and batted in two.
“We really hate to lose,” said Ben Meier, Beechwood junior shortstop. “We learned that you can’t plays for granted against Elder. We picked things up.”
Dixie Heights batted .241 (7 for 29) in the loss. Senior left fielder Gabe Thelen and senior center fielder Brennan Staton went 2 for 3 with one run scored each. Staton batted in one. Junior catcher Ethan Bosley and senior pitcher Brandon Brooks homered. Brooks drove in three and senior right fielder Mark Dugan doubled.

Softball:
Cooper Defeats Notre Dame Twice:
The Lady Jaguars (14-4) knocked off the Pandas (5-6) twice in the same day.
But the first game resumed in the top of the fourth after being postponed 19 days ago. Cooper led 3-0 at the point it stopped April 8 and built a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth before the Pandas scored three times to make the final score.
“It was a tough situation going there and essentially playing two games in one evening back to back,” said Rusty Scott, Cooper Head Coach. “But they did well. In the suspended game, we came in relaxed, played solid defense and did the small things to squeak out that win.”
Cooper outhit Notre Dame, 12-10 and had one error leading to no unearned runs. Senior catcher Gweny Wessling went 2 for 3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Junior Emily Schmeltz went 3 for 3 with one run scored. Senior Amber Chaney went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and sophomore second baseman Ava Scott went 2 for 4 with a double. Senior shortstop Dylan Scott had two RBI.
Chaney (8-1) earned the win pitching five innings striking out five, walking three and allowing four earned runs. Junior Kendall Blau pitched the last two innings striking out two, walking one and allowing three hits.
Senior Cam Steinbrunner took the loss for Notre Dame. She struck out four and walked none. Steinbrunner also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
Seventh grade right fielder Addie Zinser went 2 for 4 with junior Tori Danneman going 2 for 5 to lead Notre Dame. Danneman scored twice.
Cooper won the second game by a wider margin at 11-2 serving as the home team despite the game taking place in Park Hills. The Lady Jaguars outhit the Pandas, 14-8.
“(It was) a similar situation,” Coach Scott said. “We played good defense. The pitching was good. Hanna Hollis came in and locked it down for us.”
Blau (4-2) picked up the win pitching the first three innings. She struck out three, walked none and allowed five hits and two earned runs. Senior Hanna Hollis pitched the last four innings striking out five, walking one and allowing three hits. Blau went 2 for 4 at the plate.
Dylan Scott led Cooper at the plate going 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Wessling went 2 for 4 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Kailey Milburn went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored.
“We’ll have one hitter get us started then the momentum and energy just keeps going and going,” Milburn said. “The energy in the dugout becomes amazing and you can feel it. When all the girls are up in the dugout, it makes me feel so much better when I’m up to bat.”
Senior center fielder Ava McKinley and freshman Abby Turnpaugh both went 2 for 3 for Notre Dame. McKinley scored once and junior Rachel Finke had a double.
Cooper travels to Boone County (8-10) on Thursday for a 33rd District seed game at 5 p.m. Notre Dame plays host to Conner (8-5) at 5 p.m.
Highlands 3, Boone County 0:
The Bluebirds (13-10) shut out the Lady Rebels (8-10) for their third straight win.
Junior pitcher Kennedy Baioni (7-6) pitched another outstanding game. Baioni had nine strikeouts, one walk and two hits in the complete game.
Both teams had two errors. But none of them led to any unearned runs.
Senior KB Irwin pitched the first four innings and freshman Dani Wright pitched the last two. Irwin struck out one, walked three and allowed six hits and two earned runs. Wright struck out three, walked one and allowed one hit and one earned run.
“Knowing they had that off-speed, I knew I had match mine to theirs,” Baioni said. “I did that a lot and got a couple girls on it. We’ve all worked to hit our spots every single time. It helps tremendously, especially with good batters.”
Highlands did have its issues with Irwin’s change-up. Girls tend to swing under it popping the ball up or flying out.
“We left a whole village on base so KB made some pitches when she needed to make them,” said Milt Horner, Highlands Head Coach. “Fortunately, we did get a couple big hits. We hit the ball hard a couple times. They have a nice little rotation there. (Wright) came in and threw the ball harder and we didn’t adjust particularly well to that.”
But the Bluebirds did bat .280 (7 for 25) in the game. Sophomore center fielder Bailey Markus, senior shortstop Anna Greenwell and eighth grade first baseman Kaitlyn Dixon all went 2 for 3. Markus scored twice and Greenwell batted in two with Dixon batting in one. Boone County did not have any extra-base hits.

The Colonels had two players with multi-hit games. Sophomore first baseman Skylar Mitchell went 2 for 3 and sophomore center fielder Taylor Ingram went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Hopkins and senior third baseman Ava Meyer had triples. Meyer has been back playing third and the other senior in Bri Patsel has been playing second.
“At some point, we clicked it in somehow,” said Becca Cundiff, Dixie Heights junior catcher. “I don’t know when that point was. We started getting everything back together again. That flipped the switch. I think it’s a really good team effort we have going on right now. We want to carry that into the postseason.”
Dixie Heights then knocked off the Campbell County Camels (7-7) in a non-region game. The Colonels outhit the Camels, 14-8. Hopkins (8-4) threw another complete game walking one and allowing one earned run. Hopkins went 2 for 4 at the plate.
Dixie Heights continued to make the routine plays behind her. Campbell County had three errors to one for Dixie Heights. The Colonels scored three unearned runs to one for the Camels.
“Riley did her job,” said Sarah Osborne, Dixie Heights Head Coach. “She knows she has a good defense behind her so she doesn’t necessarily have to squeeze the strike zone. She can work the batters. Becca Cundiff does a really good job calling games. (Hopkins) did a really good job throwing them off with the off-speed.”
Dixie Heights saw six players record multi-hit games. Meyer went 3 for 3 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Cundiff went 2 for 4 with two RBI and one triple. Patsel went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. Campbell County plays at Beechwood (8-10) on Thursday at 5 p.m. Dixie Heights plays at Madison Central (14-1) at 6 p.m. Friday.
Conner 15, St. Henry 1 (5 innings):
The Lady Cougars (8-5) have quietly won five straight with a home win over the Crusaders (4-10).
Freshman Ellie Ortiz (2-2) threw a complete game earning the win. She struck out one, walked none and allowed one hit and one earned run.
“What I’m happy with is each girl will talk about the positivity, the culture and the energy so I know they’re hearing what we’ve been preaching,” said Shawn Sproles, Conner Head Coach. “We have a good streak going. We do have opponents to play. But we’re confident if we go out and play our game, we’re going to be in every game and hopefully pull it out at the end.”

Senior Mackenzie Smith started the game and freshman Megan Gonzalez finished it. Smith had a triple for the lone St. Henry hit.
Conner travels to Notre Dame (5-6) on Thursday at 5 p.m. St. Henry faces Holy Cross on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Erlanger.
Walton-Verona 15, Ludlow 0 (3 innings):
The Bearcats (9-7) downed the Panthers (1-13) on Senior Day honoring their three seniors.
The seniors are catcher Lacey Alford, third baseman Kenzie Farmer and pitcher Audrey Pollard. Pollard struck out eight retiring all nine batters for the perfect game. Pollard scored three runs.
“At first, we were all standing and talking about it,” Farmer said. “Obviously everyone wants to win on their Senior Night. But we still didn’t just think we’d go out there and win without a fight. We tried our hardest like we usually would.”
Walton-Verona batted .692 (9 for 13) in the win and drew eight walks. Sophomore shortstop Danielle Oldfield went 2 for 2 with a home run, six RBI and one run scored. Farmer went 2 for 2 with two RBI and three runs scored and sophomore right fielder Maya Lepping went 2 for 3 with one run scored. Eighth grade left fielder Jaylen Clark doubled batting in three and scoring twice.
“We actually worked on it a lot during practice (Tuesday),” said Natalie Meadows, Walton-Verona Head Coach. “We knew that the pitcher we were going to be a little bit slower speed than what we’ve seen here recently. We made sure the girls stayed back and were being patient with the pitches. I’ve been harping on the girls to pick out the pitches and go ahead and hit it no matter what the count is.”
Walton-Verona heads to the All A State Tournament on Saturday for a round-robin event. The first game at Owensboro is at 9:30 a.m. against Lynn Camp (15-7).
