Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will appear with Kentucky Republican gubernatorial candidate Kelly Craft in two get-out-the-vote rallies on May 13.
Craft, who trails frontrunner Attorney General Daniel Cameron by six points in the polls, is looking to bolster her campaign ahead of the May 16 primary.
Craft gained significant ground on Cameron after she gave her campaign $9.3 million in personal loans to spend on attack ads against Cameron. She’s spent over $4 million on TV ads.
“Kelly Craft is the candidate that Kentuckians need as their governor to usher in a new generation of leadership,” Cruz said in a statement. “I’ve seen firsthand how hard Kelly has worked to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party and negotiate the largest trade deal in American history.”
Speaking at an event in Northern Kentucky Wednesday, Cameron said Craft is “running on ads, and I am running on a record.”
Both candidates have political action committees, also known as PACs, supporting them. Craft’s billionaire coal magnate husband gave $1.5 million to the Commonwealth PAC that is buying television ads to attack Cameron.
Bluegrass Freedom Action has spent around $2 million on ads to attack Craft.
Total ad spend as of April 27 for the entire gubernatorial race has been $8.43 million, according to Medium Buying.
The nastiness of both campaigns spilled onto live TV Monday when the two finally faced off in a debate on KET.
As both candidates head toward the final stretch, Craft pulls on a significant ally from Washington in Sen. Cruz. Cruz came to Craft’s defense when she was questioned for being absent from her post as ambassador to Canada. Craft later became the ambassador to the United Nations.
