One of Kentucky First Lady Britainy Beshear’s primary goals is to make the commonwealth a safe place for all families.

“To do that, we must take steps to not only fight against domestic violence but to also support survivors and their families,” she said at a Frankfort Kroger Monday morning.

Britainy Beshear was hoping to spread the word about Shop and Share, which collects items for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Started 14 years ago by former First Lady Jane Beshear — current Gov. Andy Beshear’s mother — the program has raised more than $5 million in donations for domestic violence programs across the Commonwealth.

“Survivors of domestic violence show us the true meaning of strength and bravery on a daily basis,” Beshear said.

The Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence works in collaboration with Beshear on Shop and Share.

CEO Angela Yannelli said the event has been crucial to support domestic violence shelters across the state.

“What started as a small opportunity for Kentuckians to support domestic violence shelters has become a movement of generosity that dedicated volunteers and shoppers look forward to every single year,” Yannelli said.

Yannelli detailed the Coalition’s services, including a safe place to sleep, food, clothing, legal advocacy and assistance, and connecting with providers.

“Our programs provide shelter and supportive services to survivors of domestic violence and their children every single day of the year; even during the pandemic, they never closed their doors for one single day,” Yannelli said.

Donate items on Feb. 11 at Northern Kentucky Kroger locations between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
