Rep. Thomas Massie was one of 63 ‘no’ votes on House Resolution 831, which offers support for NATO and is “Calling on the United States Government to uphold the founding democratic principles of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and establish a Center for Democratic Resilience within the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization,” the resolution reads.
Massie, who represents the 4th Congressional that includes Northern Kentucky, said on Twitter he voted against the resolution because NATO is an old organization and the U.S. shouldn’t pay for Europe’s defense.
“NATO is a relic of the Cold War,” Massie said on Twitter. “Why should Americans pay for Europe’s defense?”
Northern Kentucky Democrat and Massie’s 4th Congressional opponent, Matthew Lehman, said via a statement that Massie continues to support Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Thomas Massie is a clear and present danger to the Free World. Massie has shown he would let the dictator Putin lay waste to democracy in Europe instead of standing up to a modern Stalin,” Lehman said. “He must be voted out while we still have a democracy.”
