I am dismayed that the discussion of Constitutional Amendment 1 in the Oct. 18 issue of LINK perpetuated the misleading summary of Amendment 1. This Amendment does not change the eligibility of non-US citizens to vote. What it does do is restrict voting by extending the needed length of time residing in KY for eligibility to vote, raising the length of time in the state from 28 days to 1 year and in the county to 6 months. I think 1 year is an unreasonably long time to have to have resided in the state in order to vote. The 28 day requirement is still the current requirement, isn’t it? Why is no one talking about this significant real change? I am increasingly distressed that amendments, propositions, and other changes are not labeled in a way that shows the true purpose. This one would be more accurately summarized as, “Requiring a longer time residing in the state for eligibility to vote.” (If the length of residency WAS previously changed to 1 year, etc., please disregard this letter.) Thank you for your time and attention.
