We recently completed our search for two new editorial board members, and I’m pleased to say that we are ready to announce our choices.

Laura Lyons

Laura Lyons is the president and owner of ATech Training in Walton and has more than 30 years of manufacturing experience.

Laura is a Northern Kentucky native and lives in Florence. She told LINK she likes home improvement projects, hiking, traveling, gardening and reading. She received her MBA from Northern Kentucky University.

In addition to running her business, Laura is on the board of directors for the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of several organizations, including the Automotive Training Manager’s Council.

As a business owner who lives in Boone County, we thought Laura would be a great voice to add to our editorial board.

Sue Kozlowski moved to Northern Kentucky in 2011 from Detroit with her husband, Dave.

Sue Kozlowski

Sue retired from the healthcare field in 2016, but it’s in name only: She has volunteered for the Boone County Animal Shelter, joined the Kiwanis Club of Boone County and even graduated from NKU with a bachelor’s degree in music in 2023.

She’s now in the Florence Women’s Club and sings with the Community Chorus of Northern Kentucky.

One of the things I liked about Sue is how thoughtful she is – able to see complicated situations from different perspectives. She also lives in a more rural area of NKY, and as development continues to creep south, we want to make sure we understand the voices of the people who are affected.

Here is a refresher on what our editorial board is and what the selection process is like:

The editorial board is a group of Northern Kentuckians who are not employed in the newsroom who help us make our content better.

Members come to quarterly editorial board meetings, where we discuss stories or topics of interest and ask for feedback or suggestions about our reporting. We rely on the board to help us ensure we are properly reflecting what’s happening in Northern Kentucky. What aren’t we covering? What are we missing? Is there a perspective we missed when telling a story? What did we do well? What should we do more of?

The selection process begins with asking for nominations via a google form. Then a group of us at LINK, with input from our boards, narrows down the potential pool by eliminating people with potential conflicts of interest (holding public office, for example, or working for someone on our managing board).

We also want to make sure the editorial board represents people who live across Northern Kentucky, so if we have a few members who live in Covington, for example, we aren’t likely to choose another member who lives in Covington. This is so that we can bring together a group of people who have different experiences, ideas and feedback.

Thank you to everyone who applied to be on the editorial board. Part of what I love about LINK is that it exposes me to how much this community wants to be involved.

If you are looking to get involved with what we do here at LINK in some capacity, email me at mgoth@linknky.com. We have all kinds of ways we can bring you into the fold, whether that’s giving us feedback in the form of surveys, coming to events, receiving monthly updates on what we’re up to, and more. Please reach out! I’d love to chat.

I can’t end this column without mentioning former editorial board member Jim Votruba, who died earlier this year. We miss him dearly.
