Students use AI to learn. Manufacturers use it to improve production. Healthcare providers are exploring AI to support patient care. Businesses use it to analyze data, automate repetitive tasks and improve decision-making. Even local governments are beginning to evaluate how artificial intelligence can improve public services.
Yet behind every AI application is something most people never see.
Computing infrastructure.
When we ask an AI assistant a question, our request travels across the internet to data centers filled with thousands of specialized processors working together to generate a response within seconds. Those facilities require reliable electricity, advanced cooling systems, high-speed fiber networks, cybersecurity, and highly skilled professionals to keep them operating around the clock.
As AI adoption accelerates, another conversation is becoming increasingly important:
How will we power the next generation of computing?
Recently, I came across a technology announcement that captured my attention.
Panthalassa, an Oregon-based technology company backed by investors including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, announced it had raised $140 million to develop floating AI data centers powered by ocean waves. The concept combines offshore renewable energy with seawater cooling in an effort to rethink how future computing infrastructure could be powered. Whether this approach ultimately succeeds remains to be seen, but it reflects something much larger than one startup. Around the world, innovators are exploring new ways to address the growing energy demands of AI.
Northern Kentucky and Ohio may not have an ocean, but the announcement raises an important question for our own communities.
If companies around the world are rethinking how AI infrastructure is powered, what conversations should we be having here at home?
AI Is More Than Software
The question is whether we are preparing our workforce to participate in it.
Electricity Deserves More Public Attention
One topic receives surprisingly little attention in everyday conversations about AI.
Electricity.
Data centers require significant amounts of power, and many organizations are now exploring how to expand computing capacity while maintaining reliable, affordable and sustainable energy supplies. The International Energy Agency has identified AI and data centers as an important emerging driver of electricity demand and emphasizes the need for thoughtful planning as these technologies continue to grow.
This does not automatically mean every community should welcome every proposed project.
Nor does it mean communities should reject them.
Instead, it means residents deserve clear information and open conversations.
How can our electric grid continue supporting both families and future industries?
How do we maintain affordable and reliable electricity?
How should transmission infrastructure evolve?
What role should nuclear energy, natural gas, renewable energy and battery storage play in supporting future growth?
How can communities remain informed before major infrastructure decisions are made?
These questions affect all of us.
Innovation Should Include Communities
Perhaps the most valuable lesson from emerging technologies like floating AI data centers is not the technology itself.
It is the willingness to think differently.
Innovation should never happen only inside laboratories or corporate boardrooms.
Communities deserve opportunities to understand how computing infrastructure works, how electricity is used, and why these investments matter.
Public understanding leads to better conversations.
Better conversations lead to better decisions.
Education should become part of infrastructure planning.
A Regional Opportunity
Rather than waiting until future challenges arrive, Northern Kentucky and Ohio have an opportunity to prepare today.
Imagine universities expanding programs focused on AI infrastructure, electrical engineering, cybersecurity and energy systems.
Imagine partnerships between utilities, manufacturers, technology companies and local governments.
Imagine local students discovering careers in industries that barely existed a decade ago.
Preparing for AI is not simply about attracting technology companies.
It is about preparing people.
One Idea Worth Exploring
Perhaps our region could establish a Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky AI Infrastructure Forum.
Not another regulatory agency.
Not another layer of government.
Instead, a collaborative forum bringing together utilities, universities, manufacturers, technology companies, economic development organizations, local governments, educators, journalists and community members.
Its purpose would be straightforward:
• Educate the public.
• Share reliable information.
• Discuss future workforce needs.
• Encourage responsible infrastructure planning.
• Build trust through transparency.
Communities make stronger decisions when conversations begin early rather than after projects become controversial.
Looking Beyond Today
Artificial intelligence will continue evolving.
The infrastructure supporting it will evolve as well.
Some ideas, like floating AI data centers, may eventually become part of our future.
Others may remain experimental.
Innovation has always involved exploration.
For Northern Kentucky and Ohio, the goal should not be to copy every new technology.
Instead, we should remain curious.
Ask thoughtful questions.
Invest in education.
Prepare our workforce.
Strengthen our infrastructure.
And ensure our communities remain active participants in shaping the future.
Artificial intelligence is not only changing software.
It is changing how we think about energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, education and economic development.
The decisions we make today will help determine whether our region simply watches that future unfold—or helps build it.
