The Banklick Watershed Council, a nonprofit council dedicated to the preservation of the Banklick Creek and its surrounding watershed, was named the Kentucky Watershed Group of the Year at a conference in October.

Granted by the Kentucky Waterways Alliance, the award recognizes the group’s conservation work.

“Healthy waterways are essential to community well-being,” said the Watershed Council’s Board Chair Anna Kirschner in a press release. “This award recognizes the passion of our volunteers, partners, and landowners who believe in our mission. We’re proud to bring people together to improve the community, and we’re grateful to the Kentucky Waterways Alliance for recognizing our impact.”

Composed largely of volunteers, the organization aims to conserve the watershed, reduce pollution, stabilize stream banks and restore wetlands.

It frequently partners with regional infrastructure providers, municipalities and state agencies to complete its work. It was granted $250,000 in May from the Kentucky Division of Water to update its watershed plan and fund other programs.
