The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 announced today that it had chosen its final design for the KY 8 Bridge, more commonly known as the 4th Street Bridge, replacement project.

The current bridge, built in 1936, connects Covington and Newport across the Licking River.

The final design is a four-lane bridge with three arches and two 12-foot wide shared-use paths for walking and cycling on either side.

“We’re excited to share the final bridge type selection,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray in the cabinet’s announcement. “The arch concept features a signature aesthetic design that considers the surrounding environment, including the nearby historic neighborhoods of Newport and Covington. Drivers and pedestrians can look forward to separate shared-use paths and four lanes that will accommodate traffic in this growing, vibrant region for decades to come.”

The cabinet will release an updated construction schedule early next year. Exact costs for the project are unclear, but past statements from the cabinet indicated the project has a $68 million budget.
