Villa Hills City Council discussed a newly drafted contract with engineering firm Bayer Brecker that would task them to redesign the intersection at Collins and Amsterdam roads at their meeting Wednesday evening.

The draft follows an initial contract agreed upon in 2020 that was voided when the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, known locally as KYTC, directed Villa Hills to modify the design in compliance with KYTC requirements such as drainage, retaining walls and environmental impact, said Bayer Brecker representative Katie Dillenburger.

The proposed contract would cost the city $357,195 in engineering expenses.

After the original contract’s cancellation, the Public Works Committee was awarded a federal funding grant to cover 80% of the construction costs, with the city covering the remaining 20%. The new contract comes after the city conducted design and safety studies stipulated in the grant.

The intersection at Collins and Amsterdam roads is a three-way stop sign and is one of the busiest in the city, said City Administrator Craig Bohman.

“As the city grew, the intersection has not changed, and so there is more traffic that goes through than the intersection it is really designed to handle,” Bohman said.

Council will vote on the contract at their Dec. 20 meeting.
