The Covington Board of Commissioners selected KZF Design Inc. to lead a team of architects, engineers, urban planners and consultants that will prepare the former IRS site for future development.

Commissioners announced their selection at Tuesday night’s meeting after receiving proposals from five companies interested in taking on the project.

“We have an exciting vision for this site, and the charge of translating those concepts into a physical foundation now falls to KZF,” Mayor Joe Meyer said.

The firm will lead the design of the infrastructure updates, which includes the restoration of a street grid that was eliminated in the 1960s. Other infrastructure includes sidewalks, utility access, and a 1,100-space parking garage.

The design for the public infrastructure will be finished in time for construction to begin in 2023. The development will be a mix of land uses, including office space, a hotel, apartments and condominiums, the possible expansion of the Northern Kentucky Convention Center, a public plaza, and a levee park. That should be finished by 2025, according to the city of Covington.

“The KZF Design team is excited to be part of this transformational project for Covington,” Chief Strategic Officer Tim Sharp said. “We look forward to rolling up our sleeves to help keep the City’s momentum moving ahead.”
