Covington Latin School is likely to become a part of Thomas More University, according to an email sent to families Wednesday.

Bishop John Iffert told families that the schools were in the midst of an “exploration of an affiliation” that would begin in the 2025-2026 academic school year.

“This is an exciting time,” Iffert said in the email. “University affiliated high schools have a proven stellar reputation in the United States. As the first private model in Kentucky and the greater Cincinnati region, this affiliation has the potential to create a new innovative approach for Catholic education while preserving a treasured tradition.”

Iffert acknowledged changes, such as a parting of ways with Covington Latin’s Headmaster Dr. John Kennedy at the end of the school year.

“I am grateful for Dr. Kennedy’s leadership of Covington Latin School during the past four years, especially through the uncertain times of the pandemic,” Iffert said. “An interim head of school will soon be announced for the 2024-2025 academic year.”

But, Iffert said, the school’s name, “its tradition of service to the Bishop as pontifical servers,  its reputation for graduating exceptional and ethical servant leaders and its faithfulness to Catholic classical education will be preserved.”

As far as next steps, Iffert said that first they would be listening to the parents and families of Covington Latin.

“The University will convene strategic work groups to help develop the new strategic plan and will engage in thoughtful conversation about connecting the past with the future,” Iffert said.
