Campbell County Schools announced the receipt of a federal grant that aids in creating a safer, more secure learning environment for students and staff.

The grant of $467,670 will fund the “Protective Measures Against School Vulnerability” project. The district’s strategy includes collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency services, ensuring school safety measures are innovative and comprehensive.

“As we celebrate this incredible grant, it brings great joy to anticipate the positive changes it heralds for our students and the wider Campbell County community,” Superintendent of Campbell County Schools Shelli Wilson said. “This is not merely an enhancement of our security protocols; it is another stride toward an environment of proactive safety, ensuring peace of mind in our educational spaces. We are building a future where every student, staff member, and family knows that safety is our deliberate pursuit and promise.”

The district is focusing on three advancements:

School safety and student affairs coordinator: This coordinator will spearhead evidence-based safety programs, bridging the gap between student support services and violence prevention.

“Their expertise will not only enhance our safety protocols but will also ensure that our disciplinary practices are restorative, contributing to a nurturing educational environment,” the district said in a news release.

Upgraded communication system: The district plans to upgrade to a 900 MHz Motorola Radio Repeaters and portable radio hardware.

“This investment means our administrative staff, local law enforcement, and emergency responders can stay connected more effectively than ever before,” the district said in a news release.

Window safety film installation: The district will be installing specialized window safety film on all ground-level windows district-wide, which will protect against the dangers of shattered glass while hindering unauthorized entries, giving emergency response teams the time needed to secure schools.
