The Kenton County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a new scam in which someone is calling people saying they have unpaid fines or outstanding warrants and demanding immediate payment over the phone.

“Remember that law enforcement will not call you about unpaid fines, missed jury duty or outstanding warrants,” Chief Deputy Col. Patrick Morgan said in a release Wednesday.

The callers are claiming to be from the civil division, the sherff’s department said.

“Please, be mindful about possible scams whether they be by phone call, email, text or by a suspicious looking letter,” the release says. “If you are asked for immediate payment over the phone reach out directly to the company or agency by a phone number you research.”

The sheriff’s office also said not to redial or use numbers provided by a possible scammer.

If someone does attempt to scam you, report it to the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection at 888-432-9257.
