The Campbell County Special Investigation Response Team responded to process the scene at Grand Avenue and I-471 in Newport. 

A suspect is in custody and is charged with attempted murder after Fort Thomas Police say they initiated a traffic stop Sunday night, which escalated into the suspect opening fire on law enforcement. 

The suspect, Daniel Foster, Jr. of Dayton, Ohio, is charged with two counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, two counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st degree, Fleeing and Evading Police (Motor Vehicle) and Fleeing and Evading Police (On Foot), Possession of Handgun by a Convicted Felon and two counts of Criminal Mischief 1st Degree.

On January 30th, 2022, at approximately 8:36 pm, an officer from the Fort Thomas Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near the Newport Pavilion for suspicion of DUI. According to police, the driver of the suspect vehicle, failed to stop for the officer and a pursuit ensued.  

The officer pursued the vehicle into Fort Thomas while requesting for additional units to assist.  

Also according to police, as additional Fort Thomas officers approached the location of the pursuit they were fired upon by the operator of the suspect vehicle. 

No officers were struck by the gunfire, but multiple rounds were fired at officers.  A canvass of the neighborhood was conducted and no civilians were found to be injured.  

Fort Thomas Police officers continued to pursue the subject back into Newport where the suspect vehicle ran a red light, striking a vehicle exiting I-471 onto Grand Ave.  The suspect vehicle was rendered disabled shortly after the accident and the suspect fled, on foot, from the vehicle.  

Fort Thomas officers initiated a foot pursuit of the suspect who was armed with a firearm. The foot pursuit continued into Newport Plaza where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.  One Fort Thomas officer was injured during the foot pursuit, but was treated and released from the hospital.

He is currently lodged in the Campbell County Detention Center.

The Campbell County Special Investigation Response Team responded to process the scene, which forced several streets to be closed temporarily. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.

Newman Avenue was cordoned off temporarily while police processed the scene.
