Dayton City Council honored the retirement of Sergeant Mark Wilke at their meeting this month. The city also swore in Jacob Smith, the newest officer to join the police force.

Wilke began his law enforcement career with the Campbell County Police Department, where he met and became good friends with current Dayton Police Chief David Halfhill.

Mayor Ben Baker awarded Wilke with the key to the city, recognizing his three years of service to Dayton.

Prior to his retirement, the sergeant had been training Officer Smith, a Dayton native who also originated with Campbell County PD. Dayton police have been investing in local recruits and those with knowledge of the area, according to Halfhill.
