Many families rely on free or reduced meals during the school year, but when school is out for the summer, that dependence can be tricky.
According to the Kentucky Department of Education, historically for every seven free or reduced-price lunches served during the school year, only one lunch is served in the summer months.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the KDE’s Summer Food Service Program helps to alleviate the summertime nutrition gap. They encourage schools and nonprofit organizations to sponsor the SFSP.
To be a sponsoring organization, groups must be:
- A public or nonprofit private school food authority (including school districts)
- A public or nonprofit private residential summer camp
- A unit of a local, municipal, county or state government
- A public or nonprofit private college or university
- Other private nonprofit organizations
Meal sites are often located in public areas including schools, community centers, parks, family-housing complexes and faith-based organizations.
