With an extreme heat warning in effect for Greater Cincinnati through the weekend, State Farm is advising drivers to prep their vehicles before hitting the road, as high temperatures increase the risk of breakdowns.

State Farm has measured that internal vehicle temperatures can reach as high as 145 degrees, while dashboard surfaces exposed to direct sunlight can reach higher than 195 degrees. In addition, summer heat can degrade exterior finishes and trigger engine failures during long drives.

State Farm recommends drivers check several key vehicle systems before traveling, including:

  • Cooling system: Inspect coolant levels and belts to help prevent engine overheating.
  • Vehicle fluids: Check motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid, as low fluid levels can increase the risk of overheating.
  • Battery: High temperatures and heavy air conditioner use can shorten battery life. Drivers should have the battery and charging system inspected regularly.
  • Air conditioning: If the vehicle is not cooling properly, the refrigerant may be low or another issue may require professional service.

For interior car protection, State Farm recommends parking your vehicle in the shade to avoid direct sunlight, using a windshield sunshade and installing seat covers to help reduce heat buildup.

Drivers are also advised to keep roadside assistance information readily available in case of a breakdown. Moreover, children and pets should never be left unattended inside a parked vehicle during hot weather.
