Union’s city administrator has announced her impending departure after five years in the position.
During a Union Commission caucus meeting on April 21, City Administrator Amy Safran announced she would be leaving in the coming months to relocate to the state of Washington.
Safran was hired for the role in June 2021, succeeding David Plummer, who is currently the city administrator of Alexandria. Mayor Larry Solomon said that Safran is expected to depart between July and September.
Throughout her tenure, Safran has been involved in several key city projects, perhaps the most impactful of which is the Union Town Square project, which is currently underway. The plan called for the design and construction of a new, more spacious municipal building, as well as a new city park that will serve as a civic and community space.
Safran’s tenure has encompassed large-scale capital development, long-range planning and incremental policy modernization – all tied to Union’s rapid growth over the past five years.
Safran thanked the city staff and commission for their years of service together.
“It has been an honor serving the City of Union, the residents and the community for the last five years,” she said. “It has been an absolute pleasure doing so because of all of you and I’ll miss you all, but today’s not goodbye. We’ve still got a lot of work to do before I leave, so more to come.”
Solomon, along with the four commissioners and city staff, also thanked her for her contributions to the city.
Solomon said the city will go through a hiring process for a new city manager following her departure.
