The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is planning to install additional measures on the Covington side of the Girl Scout Bridge, which connects Covington and Newport via KY-1120, starting next Monday. The measures follow requests made by both cities after last year’s reconfiguration of the bridge.

The measures – which will initially appear as barrels before being replaced by permanent traffic delineators – will aim to help guide drivers coming from the Newport side navigate safely off the bridge as they approach Wheeler Avenue.

The work will begin Monday, March 16, at 9 a.m.

“Crews will block the KY 1120 westbound left turn lane on the Covington approach to Wheeler Avenue,” according to an announcement from the cabinet. “Once completed, all traffic traveling from Newport to Covington on the Girl Scout Bridge will utilize Prospect Street to E. 11th Street. Once on 11th Street, motorists may use a number of roads to get to their final destination.”

“Eastbound motorists in Covington will still be required to stop on E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at Wheeler Avenue,” the cabinet continues. “This traffic calming measure will ensure safety for all road users, including the pedestrians and bicyclists that use the 12th Street/Girl Scout Bridge.”

The cabinet said it will continue to monitor traffic data on the bridge to assess if more changes are needed in the future.
