Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered flags at government buildings in the commonwealth to fly at half-staff until sunset on Sept. 14.

The order is in honor of Charlie Kirk, a conservative online personality who was shot and killed on Wednesday at Utah Valley University, following a proclamation from the White House.

The move coincides with another order from the governor to lower flags in honor of Patriot Day, which commemorates the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Centers on Sept. 11, 2001. Patriot Day falls on Thursday.

While it is not required for individuals and businesses to lower their flags, “Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the commonwealth to join in this tribute,” according to a press release from the governor’s office.
