Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials will provide updates on two of the most critical infrastructure projects in Northern Kentucky during an event this week.
Cabinet project managers Stacee Hans, Brent Spence, and Cory Wilson from 4th Street, along with Elizabeth Wetzel, the director of special projects and intergovernmental affairs for the City of Covington, will provide updates on the Brent Spence Corridor Project and the planned replacement of the 4th Street Bridge at the Covington Business Council’s monthly luncheon on Thursday.
The event will be hosted at the Embassy Suites in the Covington RiverCenter. John Hurd of Duke Energy will moderate the discussion.
According to the event’s news release, officials will discuss upcoming steps for the project, including utility relocation and stabilization of aging water and stormwater pipelines.
Officials will also discuss plans to make Goebel Park more accessible and inviting after the bridge construction is completed, while Covington’s aesthetics committee reviews designs for roads, streetscapes, murals, and signage related to the bridge projects.
The 4th Street Bridge replacement, connecting Covington and Newport via Kentucky Route 8, will close the existing bridge for two years beginning next spring. The current structure, built in 1936, will be demolished to make way for a new three-arch steel bridge with twin decks.
The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project is a multi-billion-dollar overhaul of I-71/I-75 in Northern Kentucky and Ohio. In addition to building a new companion bridge, the project will rehabilitate the existing span for local traffic, reconfigure ramps, and add pedestrian and bicycle connections.
