Florence is finalizing work on a new portal that will allow its residents to monitor water usage, even alerting them to potential line breaks.
“They can get a text, an email, a call, letting them know water’s running through their line,” said Public Services Director Eric Hall at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
The portal is not yet finished, but Hall said residents would be alerted as soon as its ready.
In addition, council shared Tuesday that they had vetted an insurance company that can assist homeowners with costs related to water-line repairs and replacing sewer lines.
HomeServe is a Connecticut-based company that offers plans to single-family homeowners.
“A repair or a replacement of a line could cost anywhere from, depending on if you’re in pavement, anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 to fix one,” Hall said.
There are three types of policies homeowners can choose from: exterior line coverage for $5.75 a month, sewer line coverage for $7.75, and an interior plumbing and drainage plan for $9.99.
Hall said at the meeting that the company provides the services it promises consumers, but that the city is not a facilitator of the insurance for residents.
“Our only part to play in this is allowing them to use our logo to make it more legit and make those who are receiving it comfortable about moving forward,” Hall said.
