The City of Edgewood is warning residents to expect heavy traffic at the intersection of Dudley Road and Charter Oak Road, which leads into R.C. Hinsdale Elementary, due to ongoing road construction as the new school year approaches.

Students coming and going from the nearby St. Pius X Catholic School will also affect traffic patterns.

“As crews continue major improvements in this area, traffic has been shifted onto the new north-side pavement, while work continues on the south side,” according to a city announcement on social media. “Temporary traffic signals are in place. This means that congestion during peak school hours will be heavier than usual.”

St. Pius students return on Aug. 12, and R.C. Hinsdale students return on Aug. 13. Arrival and dismissal times for both schools will likely incur increased traffic. The city identifies peak times for St. Pius students at 7:10 a.m. and 1:55 p.m. Peak times for R.C. Hinsdale are 8:50 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Sidewalks on Dudley Road between Magnolia Court and Charter Oak Road will be closed to pedestrians due to construction. Pedestrians should detour onto Magnolia Court, then Sandalwood Drive and then onto Charter Oak Road.

The city recommends people “be prepared for sudden stops and changing traffic patterns. Follow the instructions of flaggers and temporary signals. Stay alert for children crossing the street and school staff directing traffic. Whenever possible, consider alternate routes to bypass construction congestion.”
