Scam alert! Graphic provided | The City of Independence

The Kenton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a fresh round of scam calls and the tactics they employ.

“The scammer may push their potential victim to not hang up the phone and not to tell anyone about the call or they will come to the person’s location to immediately arrest them,” the office warns. “New approaches include the scammer transferring the caller to their ‘supervisor’ who continues to pressure the potential victim about missing a court date, jury duty or other legal matters. Scammers can be very convincing. Hang up and call the agency directly by a number YOU look up, NOT one the scammer provides.”

The office reminds residents that law enforcement agencies and the courts will not call about unpaid fines, missed jury duty or court dates, or outstanding arrest warrants. Moreover, agencies will not demand payment of any kind over the phone, whether cash, checks, electronic payments, credit and gift cards or cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin).

Scam calls should be reported to the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection by calling (888)432-9257.
