Dayton is moving ahead on its summer improvement plans. At its June 10 meeting, council approved bids to add four pickleball courts to Gil Lynn Park.

Under the agreement, JK Muerer Paving will construct the new courts and repave the park’s existing basketball courts for $111,745. That total includes $75,670 for the excavation and construction of the courts, including footers for the net posts and asphalt, and $36,075 for repaving the existing courts.

City Administrator Jay Fossett said the improvements at Gil Lynn have been part of the city’s strategic plan, and the pickleball courts are at the top of the list. When examining the area, city crews discovered the basketball courts needed repaving and added that to the bid. Work on the park pavilions has been underway and was to be finished mid-month, he said.

The project received two bids; Muerer’s was lower and more responsive, he said. He asked council to approve the bid so that the work could move forward. Council approved unanimously.

The funds for this project come from the city parks tax. Funding was included in the upcoming 2026 fiscal year budget. That budget also received a second reading and approval at the council meeting.

Fossett said there will be one more project coming for Gil Lynn. After the paving work is done, the city will hire a separate company to paint the courts and install the nets. Later, the city will also add fencing.

The plan is for the pickleball courts to be ready for play after the paving and related projects are completed this summer.
