Fort Wright City Council heard the first reading of an annual budget that requires no raise in taxes. Council members promise that services will remain “superior” and that taxpayer funds will be used appropriately.

“Basically, we’re keeping the same level of service and infrastructure,” Fort Wright Mayor Dave Hatter said. “All the stuff that makes this a great place to live.”

LINK asked City Administrator Jill Cain Bailey about any changes in the upcoming year’s budget.

“This budget will raise the salaries for positions in the fire, police, public works, and administration departments,” Bailey said.

This allows the city to remain competitive and retain staff. The city is also building its budget goals regarding staffing levels. They have budgeted to have five fire department staff members on shift at all times.

The police department will receive two new cruisers to assist with their daily work, and the city anticipates that public works equipment will require some maintenance throughout the year. Other than that, Bailey said department heads haven’t asked for much this year.

“I thank them for that,” Bailey said. “And for working so hard to stay within budget every year.”

One significant change is in the parks and recreation fund allocation. The city will use some of these funds to demolish the former Fort Wright Civic Club building. The upcoming year’s budget does not address a new use for the space. Fort Wright officials said that decision is coming further down the road.

Bailey told LINK that while the budget is built to operate without an increase in taxes, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any increase.

“Until we get more information on tax rates from the state in July, we can’t be sure,” Bailey said. “Ultimately, it’s up to council.”

Council will hear the second reading and vote on the budget at a special meeting.
