The Kenton County Sheriff’s Office said it has received multiple calls regarding phone contact from a scammer who claims to be with the Kenton County Sheriff.
Sometimes using the name “Sergeant Johnson,” the scammer states he is calling about court, missed jury duty or unpaid fines.
Scammers can be aggressive and professional in their approach to taking your money. Do not give or confirm any personal information over the phone, do not give them any payment, do not agree to meet them, and hang up on them.
Some clues that you are talking to a scammer include verbal threats of “going to jail,” pressure “not to call anyone” about his call, demanding that you “remain on the line” with him while you obtain money, and demands of payment via electronic funds or gift cards.
Remember, the sheriff’s office will attempt to serve court papers in person—never by phone. Hang up on suspicious calls and call the agency at a telephone number you look up to confirm the situation.
To report continued nuisance calls, please contact the Kentucky Attorney General, Office of Consumer Protection at 888-432-9257.
