Campbell County Schools is working with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services to help families access food over the summer.
The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer program is a permanent federal child nutrition initiative that helps students from eligible families cover the cost of summer meals. Campbell County Schools Superintendent Shelli Wilson said the program aims to bridge the nutritional gap many students face when they lose access to school-provided meals during summer breaks.
The district would receive $12,000 for administering the program.
Students aged six to 17 who have received the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, the Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program, and/or Kinship Care for at least one month are automatically eligible. They will receive a one-time lump sum of $120, which is $40 per summer month per eligible child.
Families that are not automatically eligible can apply online if they meet the income eligibility requirements.
The district must provide a monthly list of eligible students throughout the year.
“I’m glad to see this to help our students over the summer, those who rely on our meals, the summer months can be a long time,” Campbell County Board of Education Vice Chair Kimber Fender said.
