Union is now accepting applications for an open spot on the city commission, which became vacant following the ouster of the previous commission by the Boone County Circuit Court last week.
The court battle arose out of an election challenge brought by Doug Bine, who formerly sat on the commission but lost his bid for reelection in November, according to the election results tabulated prior to the court case.
Bine was later appointed to the commission. Bine brought the challenge to the court after residents reported receiving wrong ballots at two Union polling places. The court eventually ruled the election void and granted Mayor Larry Solomon the power to begin the process of appointing new members to the commission. The current commission consists of Solomon, Bine, John Mefford and George Eldridge.
City residents who want to put their names in the running for an appointment should send a cover letter and resume to City Administrator Amy Safran via email at amys@cityofunionky.org or through normal mail to the city building located at 1843 Bristow Drive in Union.
Applicants must meet the following criteria: They must be at least 18 years old, they must be a qualified registered voter and they must remain a resident of the city of Union for the entire term of their appointment, which concludes at the end of 2026.
Applications must be received by Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. to be considered. Questions should be directed to the city administrator by emailing amys@cityofunion.org or by calling (859)384-1511.
