Zoning for a dementia assisted care facility in Fort Mitchell has cleared the Kenton County Planning Commission.

Dubbed Sages of All Ages, the facility is slated for construction on Grandview Drive near General Ormsby Mitchel Park. The concept plan submitted to the planning commission calls for two buildings, each one about 8,100 square feet and capable of housing 16 residents. The concept plan also calls for central courtyard between the two buildings, covered porches and 17 parking spaces.

“I just really want to stress [this is] residential assisted living,” Crystal Wilmhoff, a nurse and co-owner of the proposed facility, said to the Kenton County Planning Commission last week. “This is not supposed to be an institution.”

Wilmhoff said that in her own experience, small residential assisted living facilities were rare in Kentucky. She said that many of the residents she’s worked with are often sent over to Ohio as a result.

Many of the commissioners agreed the facility was needed.

“I think facilities like this are sorely needed in Northern Kentucky,” said Planning Commission Fort Mitchell representative Jeff Bethell.

“Facilities like this came out several times in our outreach for the implementation of the [comprehensive] plan,” said Covington Representative Kareem Simpson.

Final approval now moves to the Fort Mitchell City Council.
