Alexandria’s new city campus is in its design phase, and the city council heard updates and saw renderings of the new space at its Aug. 1 meeting.

Representatives with CT Consultants and Pepper Construction shared the progress of the city campus’ design, which includes a new attached community center and police department. The renderings presented were preliminary, and the design is subject to change based on the materials, color, etc.

The complex will be located on Constable Drive and U.S. 27 in Alexandria, on property purchased in 2020. The front of the building will face Constable Drive, and the back will face U.S. 27.

“We don’t want a building that fits our needs right now because we know our needs are going to continue to grow,” Alexandria Mayor Andy Schabell said. “This building has plenty of space for the police department to continue to grow, our admin to grow, and if we end up taking planning and zoning back from Campbell County at some point. You’ve already got offices dedicated to that.”

Schabell said they took input from every department head and asked them things like what they needed now and what they think they’ll need 20 years from now.

The new site’s first floor or basement level will house the community center and police department, which includes a garage. There is a two-story gym with a running track around the top and a fitness/gym area.

The gym rendering is subject to change—for instance, they have already removed the bleachers from the site plan, and there are fewer floor markings on the basketball court.

The second floor of the building will have a common area, planning and zoning, meeting rooms, offices, and the new council chambers.

“It’s really going to be a nice addition to the community,” CT Consultants Senior Architect Michael Anderson said. “One thing we wanted to introduce was a native fieldstone. We’re trying to bring some Kentucky to the hall so it’s going to have a little rusticated feel with the stone on the front as well as the brick and some other modern amenities too.”

As part of the design plan, the city is also moving Tribute Park to the new campus. The park is currently located at the corner of U.S. 27 and W. Main Street in Alexandria, adjacent to the current city building.

The project’s cost estimate is $22,485,693; however, there are some contingencies. Contingencies are dollars not specifically allocated to any one item.

There is a $1,374,714 design contingency and a $985,212 construction contingency, for a total of $2,103,935. Additionally, the city’s mechanical team estimated they could receive as much as $900,000 off the price of the anticipated geothermal system through federal rebates.

Construction is projected to start in December of this year and go through May 2026.
