The Fort Wright Police Department announced last week the creation of a new detective position within their ranks. The move comes on the heels of a round of leadership hiring that took place at the city council meeting in late June, which occurred following the resignation of former Police Chief Ed Butler.

“Mayor [Dave] Hatter and the Fort Wright City Council unanimously, in collaboration with newly appointed Police Chief Jonathan Colwell and City Administrator Jill Bailey, determined that the addition of a police detective position was essential to the facilitation of day-to-day operations of the police department and would provide for direct and more efficient investigations and response to our residents, businesses, and visitors about any criminal activity that may have negatively impacted them,” said the city announcement.

The announcement also stated that the department will seek an internal applicant for the position rather than searching for an outside hire. The department’s new structure will now consist of a police chief, a police captain, two police sergeants, the new detective position (who may also engage in patrol duties as needed) and eight patrol officers.
