Covington Police Specialist Gideon Craymer will be promoted to sergeant, effective July 7.

Mayor Joseph Meyer announced the promotion during Tuesday’s city commission meeting.

Covington Police Chief Brian Valenti introduced Craymer, who has been with the Covington Police Department since May 2009. He has experience in patrol as a field officer and has also served on the SWAT team, the chief said.

Craymer thanked the commissioners and the chief and shared a passage of scripture he said has helped him in his decade-and-a-half as a police officer through a variety of difficult situations. He then thanked and introduced his wife and their six children.

“I’m sure many of you understand the value of the unconditional love and appreciation that children can offer, and I appreciate them a lot…I wanted to thank the leadership of the Covington Police Department for this opportunity and the leadership with the city,” Craymer said.

Meyer said, “Your record with the Covington department shows that you have earned this, and we expect you to continue in your leadership to show the fine qualities that you have exhibited as an officer.”

City commissioners and staff also took the opportunity at the meeting to thank city attorney David Davidson, who is retiring this month.

“I can’t say enough about how much I’ve enjoyed working with him and how much I appreciate his expertise and the counsel he’s provided me. Thank you, David,” said City Manager Ken Smith.
