The Elsmere Police Department has issued a statement on the hiring of Tyler Brockman, a former Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy, whose actions as a police officer in the past led to backlash among some of the community.
The department announced Brockman’s hiring on June 17. In 2014, while employed with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Brockman shot and killed teenager Samantha Ramsey as she attempted to drive away from him at a field party.
According to the statement, the department said Brockman was “fully vetted through the department’s normal hiring process, including a complete background check and a stringent review of his personnel file.”
Elsmere PD continued, stating that they are aware of the 2014 incident and that “the incident was thoroughly investigated, and a Boone County grand jury declined to issue an indictment after being presented evidence by a special prosecutor. He has continued to work in law enforcement over the past decade.”
