The Covington Education Foundation has named Covington Mayor Joe Meyer its 2024 Person of the Year.
“You would be hard pressed to find a more deserving candidate or someone who has had such a unique and lasting impact on public education in Covington and throughout Kentucky over his years of dedicated service,” said Covington Board of Education President Tom Haggard. Haggard is also a member of the foundation.
The foundation was established in 1997 “to provide post-secondary scholarships, develop youth leaders, and support mentoring. Since 2009, the foundation has provided funds to support 50 mentor pairs for one year, awarded $50,125 in college scholarships and fees, and granted $4,550 to youth leadership development,” according to the foundation’s webpage.
“In today’s world, every student needs an education beyond high school if they want to participate meaningfully in this nation’s economy,’’ Meyer said. “If we leave our youngest behind, we condemn them to a lifetime of challenges and difficulty. It’s in our interest as a society to help every kid develop their skills as much as they are capable.’’
The foundation will hold an award ceremony on June 12 at 6 p.m. at Drees Pavilion in Devou Park. If you would like to purchase a ticket to attend the event or if you’re a business interested in sponsoring the event, please contact Janice Krumwiede at janice.krumwiede@covington.kyschools.us or (859)392-3182.
