Kenton County Police Chief Michael “Spike” Jones will step down from his role as chief in September, according to an announcement from the county Thursday.
Jones’ name appears on the agenda for next week’s meeting of the Covington Board of Commissioners as a new hire for the role of assistant city manager.
“We are incredibly grateful for the leadership Spike has brought to the Kenton County Police Department over the past 11 years,” Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann said. “He has helped strengthen this department, build a strong foundation for the future and position KCPD for continued success. We look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role and seeing what he brings back to the City of Covington.”
Jones will conclude his role as police chief on Sept. 11. The Board of Commissioners will vote on whether to hire Jones on Aug. 25.
Jones formerly worked for the Covington Police Department and served as the city’s police chief from 2012 to 2015 when he retired. This retirement was short lived; he came out of retirement the same year to become the Kenton County police chief.
The county’s announcement states an internal transition plan for the police chief position is being developed and that more information will be announced in the future.
