Alexandria City Council Member Susan Vanlandingham announced her resignation at the March 7 meeting.
Vanlandingham said her resignation comes after her family intends to move out of the city. It will be effective on April 1.
“I didn’t take this decision lightly,” Vanlandingham said. “I did not want to resign prior to the end of the term; however, the timing is just not going to work for us to wait any longer.”
Vanlandingham said she wanted to make the announcement now to give the council enough time to appoint a replacement.
“It’s been a pleasure working with you all, and again, thank you, everyone, and the administrative staff,” Vanlandingham said. “It’s been a pleasure. I really enjoyed serving. I wish you guys the best and hope whoever takes the seat really is able to work with you guys and continue moving forward with the city of Alexandria.”
Vanlandingham also serves as chair of the city’s Future Planning Committee.
“As you have done the whole time on council, you’re thinking about the city, and you’re thinking about what’s next by making this announcement a little bit early to give some time, I appreciate that,” Alexandria Mayor Andy Schabell said. “Obviously whoever sits in that seat has very big shoes to fill. But I appreciate all of the time and effort you put into this. You worked hard. You have a lot of good ideas, ideas that I believe we will keep in the city long after you’re no longer part of the city.”
Vanlandingham’s last council meeting will be on March 21.
